Saturday 24th March 1979

Division II

Luton Town 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Nicholas)

Gate: 11,008

A great away day for Palace and their travelling fans of which I was happy to be one. This was an incredible season where this Palace side of 10 home-produced players plus John Burridge kept 21 clean sheets and conceded just 24 goals. Goal-scoring was more of an issue but a good summer in the transfer market would address that. Or so we thought.

Front cover shows the great Bob Hatton, who scored 29 goals for the Hatters in 82 games and well over 200 in his long career. All I can remember in this match is his missing an open goal when Burridge threw the ball straight to him but somehow, with an empty net before him, he flunked it. The many pints consumed on the day and subsequent 42 years have expunged the precise details from my memory.

MEMO to derby1884 - "Hilversumsche FC". Wasn't Hilversum one of those mysterious places on the old radio dials, back in the day?

Pete Yes you are correct. Hilversum, also known as 'media city' was a very important radio transmission centre. Was formed in the 1920's, and was on the old type radio tuning dials.

Saturday 25th March 1961

Division IV

Aldershot 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Petchey)

Gate: 11,389

As Palace's promotion season drew to a conclusion, they suffered four consecutive defeats in March of which this was the third, a run that cost them the title. Two of the Shots' forward line, Mike Deakin and Alan Woan, were recent arrivals at the Rec and had both given Palace sterling service in the not-too-distant past, so probably played out of their skin today.

Palace's goalscorer was George Petchey, an ever-present in this, his first season after signing from QPR. He's seen here vaulting in the club's impressive gym, situated right outside the Glaziers' Bar, which did at least save the players' energy after finishing training. The photo was taken in either late 1961 or the first half of 1962.

Saturday 25th March, 1939.
QPR 0 v Notts County 1

As war loomed, this was one of Alec Stock's few games he played for QPR, later managing them for a decade between 1959-68, including the League Cup win over West Brom in 1967 at Wembley.

Saturday 26th March 1960

Division IV

Rochdale 4 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 2,562

Thumping on the road for Palace on their first ever visit to Spotland. Ex-Palace winger Tony Collins was in the home line-up, three months before he became manager of the Dale club. A couple of snippets from the programme follow. One look at the crowd figure illustrates why this sort of article is necessary.

Secondly the Palace pen portraits, showing each player's height. Palace's tallest forward was Alan Woan, all 5'8" of him. No doubt high balls rained in on them all afternoon. Manager George Smith resigned a week or so after this debacle, as he said he would if he didn't get the club promoted.

Scottish League
First Division
26th March 1966

Dundee v Stirling Albion

Modern generation fans in Scotland brought up on the glory of the two big Glasgow clubs probably arent aware of the success of teams like Dundee in the sixties. European Cup semi finalists at the first time of asking just a couple of seasons previous, recently promoted Albion still found them too formidable on this league visit being soundly defeated 6-2
