|
|
Saturday 1st March 1980
Division I
Bristol City 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Nicholas, Flanagan)
Gate: 15,947
Palace were starting to slide and after this comfortable win at Ashton Gate they won only two further games, ending up 13th on 40 points - at the time, the club's best-ever final league position. City were relegated in 20th place with 31 points. Programme described as a "Big Match Companion", which is pushing it a bit far in either respect.
Bit of a dearth of fixtures on this date......... |

'Palace, the team of the 80's' we never thought at the time that it would eventually refer to the age of the manager! |

Ignore the five goals and the match report I have indicates this was quite an even game!

Tuesday 2nd March 1954
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 0 Brentford 0
Typical programme fare for a Palace floodlit friendly, and a goalless draw enlivened only by the re-appearance of a former Palace star in the Bees No 10 shirt, Johnny Rainford. just noticed on the front cover a previous owner has written the date, starting off with Tuesday 30th February before correcting it. And the owner, not necessarily the same one, has typed the result and Brentford's team-changes onto the page, one can only assume this was done after the game and not before or during! |

2 March 1946
Workington v Stockton
North Eastern League
Simple 4 pager. Workington editorial on the rear supporting an idea from South Liverpool that the 3rd division should be divided into three sections. Both South Liverpool and Workington had ambitions to get a place in the League.

"Biggest game in our history" states the editorial in the Fletton programme as they welcomed their United Counties Lge opponents.. The hosts were certainly on form, though, having won all bar one of the games they'd played up to the end of February in the Peterborough League.

Saturday 3rd March 1962
Division III
Peterborough United 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Byrne)
Gate: 12,095
The last game of Johnny Byrne's reign at Selhurst before he moved to the big time at West Ham in exchange for £58,000 plus Ron Brett. He signed off with a goal but Palace were soundly beaten by Posh and with Byrne's departure, the team went on a terrible slide, winning none, drawing 6 and losing 7 of their last 13 matches, to finish a disappointing 15th. Posh were 6th and for the second season in a row, scored over 100 goals. Johnny is shown here in a composite picture in front of the Selhurst Main Stand.

Saturday 4th March 1950
Division III South
Swindon Town 4 Crystal Palace 2 (Kurz 2)
Gate: 15,217
The meat in a wooden-spoon sandwich with Ronnie Rooke at the helm and Palace finishing in 7th place, despite this defeat which was the side's first since December and there would be only two more this season. It all looked so promising for Ronnie but of course, it didn't last. Swindon ended up in 16th, only 3 points behind Palace - it was very close in mid table. A very flimsy 8pp programme, surprising how so many survive. |

4th March, 1961
Luton Town 1 Derby County 1 (Curry)
att: 13,001
4th March, 1995
Northern Football Alliance
Rutherford v Walker Ledwood Fosse
Gateshead-based Rutherford side were a respectable third in the table but the visitors were 4 points clear at the top as well as having 3 games in hand so, unsurprisingly, would go on to win the title that season.
Very readable 24 page programme with advertising limited to just the front and back cover.
Rutherford ran teams in three leagues and had a listed squad of no fewer than 56 players.

Tuesday 5th March 1968
Division II
Charlton Athletic 0 Crystal Palace 1 (McCormick)
Gate: 20,201
Palace completed the double over their neighbours thanks to centre half John McCormick, usually referred to as a "craggy Scot". The game was originally scheduled for January but was postponed due to snow. McCormick was signed from Aberdeen for £1500 in 1966, the bargain of the century, and he played for 6 seasons, racking up 225 games, 123 of those in Div 1, always hard, never dirty and the likes of Osgood, Astle, Davies and Hunt would know they were in for a tough game. £1500.... incredible business as manager Bert Head also picked up centre forward Tommy White at the same time, he played 38 games (14 goals) before heading back up north to Blackpool - the brother of the late great John White, with the heart of a lion, this was his last game for Palace. Here they are on joining in 1966, John left, Tommy right:
