Saturday 18th March 1950

Division III South

Aldershot 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 8,034

This was the first of Palace's 6 draws in their last 9 games as they finished 7th, their only single-digit placing post-war until 1958/9 (in Div 4). Shots struggled away to end up just outside the re-election places in 20th - an improvement for both sides as in 48/9 they had finished 21st & 22nd. This time Newport & Millwall occupied the basement spots.

Saturday 19th March 1949

Division III South

Crystal Palace 4 (Lewis, Chilvers, McCormick, og), Bristol City 0

Gate: 11,840

A letter to all supporters from the club Chairman - note his location:-

And our league position at the time:-

And that's where we stayed, finishing on 27 points, 6 behind Aldershot. This match was easily the best result of a very poor season, culminating in the club's first-ever appointment with the re-election committee. Manager Jack Butler resigned at the end of it with Mr Harper putting his faith and a lot of money behind new player-manager Ronnie Rooke.

Percy Harper another Palace chairman who was not interested in football but in making money, perhaps not for the club.

All the signings Ronnie Rooke made were his drinking pals.

**It's a small world - I can't find my 72/3 Rothmans Yearbook either!
Never mind, sounds like a cracking match.

19th March, 1949

Portsmouth 1 Derby County 0

att: 43,188

A rather under-strength Derby side couldn't stop Pompey racking up another 2 points on their way to the title.

19th March, 2005

Inverurie Loco Works 7 Rothes 1

It's a nice drive from Aberdeen to Inverurie. About 35 minutes. Even less now the bypass is in operation.
As far as Highland Lge grounds go, though, it wasn't the nost aesthetic example. Rather dominated by industrial machinery surrounding it.
I spent the first half in the "home end", the second half standing alongside the massed Rothes support behind the goal (all 8 of them).

Locos finished 2nd in the table, two points behind champions Huntly. Rothes (who have improved markedly in recent years) finished 2nd from last, three points ahead of Brora Rangers who are as dominant now in the Highland League as they were dominated back then.

Amazing what a bit of financial investment can achieve, eh?
Whether or not they could sustain a place in the SFL is debatable. They seem to want to but I'd have my doubts.

Saturday 20th March 1948

Division III South

Notts County 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 30,558

Back page revealing why the programme was a relatively small format, 8pp job.

At the time of the game, County were 12th and Palace 16th, disappointing and particularly for Notts who had a dream pairing up front. Both sides picked up as the season ended, with County in 6th and Palace 13th, 7 points behind. The crowd size is staggering really, given this is Div 3 S, and looking at the Palace fixtures, of their 42 games, only 7 were played to crowds of below 10,000, with a highest of 22,086 for eventual champions QPR.
