Saturday 14th March 1964
Middlesbrough v Leeds Utd

One of my favourite programmes because it was my first ever away game
Leeds won 3-1 0n the way to promotion.

Remember the day because the weather was atrocious, rained all day and a number of games were postponed or abandoned.

Saturday 14th March 1970

Divison I

Crystal Palace 2 (Hoy, C Jackson) Southampton 0

Gate: 20,867

An interesting selection of letters.... (hope all legible)

A vital win for Palace, one of only 6 wins for Palace this season. Saints also posted only 6 wins and both stayed up as relegated Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday had fewer draws. Palace's first-ever top flight season ended in 20th, but it felt like we'd won the league!

Saturday 15th March 1947

Division III South

Swindon Town 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 13,711

Some interesting matter there about the weather, a threatened players' strike and transfers. As to the game, a narrow win for the Moonrakers who were in 5th place and ended one step higher though were 17 points behind champions Cardiff. Palace meanwhile were half way at the time of the game, but won only one game in the last 14 and finished 18th. Boss George Irwin failed to survive the summer. He was the club's trainer pre-war, manager through WW2 and a former goalkeeper at the club between 1921 and 1923 playing 17 times, the first ex-player to manage the club.

Saturday 16th March 1968

FA Amateur Cup semi final (at Selhurst Park)

Leytonstone 0 Sutton Utd 0

Gate: ?

A programme that's doubled as a coaster finds its way onto FPC with Selhurst Park hosting the Amateur Cup semi final between local neighbours Sutton Utd and from the East, Leytonstone. A goalless draw ensued, the Essex boys won the replay at Griffin Park 3-1 and then beat Chesham United of the Athenian League in the Wembley final in front of 52,000.

A few notables in the line-ups with Dario Gradi a Sutton regular, Gordon Kew with the whistle and on the cerise flag we had Ray Toseland, a regular whistler of the 1970's. Forgive me if MJ Taylor of Deal was also a league referee, there was a Mike Taylor who reffed in the 70's/80's but I don't know if it's the same guy.

16th March, 1953

First floodlit match at the Baseball Ground

Derby County 3 (Parry 2, D.Hazledine) Notts County 0

16th March, 1946

Chesterfield reserves 1 Derby County reserves 3

16th March, 1970

Bradford (Park Avenue) 0 Oldham Athletic 0

att: 3,163

Already on a run of 9 games without a win and also 7 points adrift at the foot of the league, the Avenue would only win 1 more match between now and the season's end.
And, of course, wouldn't be re-elected.

Monday 17th March 1958

Floodlit Friendly

Crystal Palace 1 England Amateur XI 0

Gate:-

A trial match for the England side with a big international v Germany looming. Good to see Palace listing more or less a full first team, though I don't know if that was the final starting XI.

Warren Bradley was on the wing for England, he signed for Manchester United from Bishop Auckland the following November, aged 25, and stayed just over 3 years, playing 63 league games and won 3 full England caps to go with his Amateur honours. Then had a short spell at Bury before heading back to non-league with Macclesfield.
