Came across this curio when I was sifting through some boxes. Some famous football names alongside some very infamous showbiz names! Final score was 9-4 to the Grundy XI, bet that was a real spectacle! Does anyone collect these Showbiz XI programmes? I seem to remember Dennis Waterman was a big noise in celebrity games in the 70s and early 80s. Diolch, Mark Thumbs Up

I remember seeing Sean Connery playing in one of these games. Can’t remember much about it at all. The Davies brothers( Ray and Dave) of Kinks fame used to turn out in these games. I would have thought any programmes signed by those two would be collectible. The others from the 1960s don’t appear to be of much monetary value at all. Perhaps the post war and 1950s are worth something . I remember seeing one , Rory Storm and the Hurricanes ( Merseybeat band with Ringo on drums) had signed it .That would have been worth getting! Just to add, if l had got the TV Stars 11 signed by Connery, it would be a £50 plus item. I also recall that Ronnie Corbett appeared in a lot of those 1960s games.

Not Bobby Moore, rather B Moore of the Manx FA

Bobby was in Germany that day as part of West Ham's pre season tour

There actually looks to have been 2 distinct celebrity exhibition teams.

I've a few of their games against military sides in services fundraisers.

Sean Connery, Des O'Connor, David Frost, Billy Cotton etc: 'Show Biz'.

Ronnie Corbett, Roy Castle, Bernard Bresslaw etc: 'TV All Stars'.

Sunday 12th April 1959
Show Business XI v RAF Bovingdon
at Chaulden Lane, Boxmoor

Jimmy Henney, Billy Cotton, John Burgess, Walley Barnes, Franklyn Boyd,
Sean Connery, Siggy Jackson, Glen Mason, Ronnie Carroll, Toni Dalli,
Dave King
Substitutes: Chas McDevitt, Peter Regan, Des O'Connor

Sunday 4th October 1959
TV All Stars v RAFA Goole
at Victoria Pleasure Ground, Goole

Jess Conrad, Pete Murray, Mike Winters, Maurice Kaufman, Larry Taylor,
Harry Fowler, Anthony Newley, Ronnie Corbett, Bernie Winters, Roy Castle,
Tommy Steele

Thursday 15th September 1960
TV All Stars v RAFA Chelmsford
at New Writtle Street, Chelmsford

TV All Stars from:
Bernie Winters, Harry Fowler, Pete Murray, Maurice Kaufman, Alfie Bass,
Paul Carpenter, Anthony Newley, Andrew Ray, Jess Conrad, Tommy Docherty,
Larry Taylor, Mike Winters, Ronnie Corbett, Roy Castle, Bernard Bresslaw,
Derek Franklin, June Cunningham Surprised, Peter Thompson, Don Fox, Norman Rossington,
Mike Desmond, Hugh Elton

Sunday 15th September 1963
Showbiz XI v RAFA Hucknall
at Linby Colliery Welfare Ground

Showbix XI from:
Tommy Steele, David Frost, Sean Connery, Peter Thomson, Pip Wedge,
Ronnie Carroll, Billy Wright, Chas McDevity, Glen Mason, Billy Cotton,
Harry Fowler, Franklyn Boyd, John Burgess, Jack Gordon, Kenny Lynch,
Jimmy Henney, Len Duquemin, Andrew Ray, Siggy Jackson, Walley Barnes,
Des O'Connor, Alex Forbes

All very entertaining. Sort of like 'Soccer Aid' but 50yrs prior.

I suspect many never actually appeared on the day, mind you.

Not a Showbiz team, but a similar type of event . This Charity match in 1949 at Crystal Palace might well have been the last appear appearance on a football pitch by the legendary Alex James. The great man died just four years later. The programme states that James had specially trained just for this one game.

I stumbled upon these 2 Dennis Waterman programmes as previously mentioned in a small collection I picked up recently. Oddities for sure but neither have team line ups as they’re all blank!

Both for sale if anyone would like to make an offer!

I collect any with a Millwall player listed so if you have any spare please let me know.

Interestingly, I also have the Sir Alf XI which Holtie pictured above. You get quite an eclectic mix of players in the line-ups.

Here’s a 1959 Showbiz team. Des O’Connor was considered to be a decent player. During the 1958 Buddy Holly British tour , Des was the tour announcer. When the tour ended Buddy gave Des his guitar . I don’t know if he kept hold of it, but it must now be worth hundreds of thousands.

Didn't Des have something to do with Northampton Town? I've got a picture of him in an annual somewhere emerging from the tunnel, ball in hand, wearing Cobblers' shirt. May have been for charity, I suppose.

You're right about the guitar - bloke in America recently made a 6 figure sum by selling a fretless guitar once owned by George Harrison circa 1967 and which had been given to him by John Lennon.

Here’s Des talking about his playing days: “ l was playing against Hull Beach. I went past their full-back, l left him for dead. I went past him again and was making him look a fool. He came over to me and whispered ‘ lf you do that to me again l will break your leg’. It frightened the life out of me. This guy was built like a tank. I didn’t go near him for the rest of the game. I thought l don’t really need this. Maybe l was a bit chicken. I don’t know”. Des O’Connor, a semi- professional with Northampton Town
