Saturday 1st February 1947

Division III South

Crystal Palace 2 (Russell, Naylor), Leyton Orient 0

Gate: 8,326

A win for Palace but both sides had poor returns in this the first full post-war season, the Glaziers ending 18th on 37 points, and the O's one place and 5 points worse off. Some things don't change... supporters:-

1 February 1947

Patrick Thistle v Third Lanark

I was looking for a result for this match but it looks as though it was postponed and played on 8th March when Partick won 3 - 1.

Can anyone confirm this and, if so, was a new programme issued for the 8th March?

1/2/67 FA Cup 3rd Round Replay
Tottenham 1 Millwall 0
An Alan Gilzean goal gives Spurs the victory over their second division opponents following a 0-0 draw at The Den a few days earlier.
Spurs would go on to beat Chelsea in the Final and also went on an amazing run in the second half of that season, losing just once in twenty eight matches after Boxing Day to the end of the campaign.

1/2/69 Division One
QPR 0 Everton 1
Jimmy Husband with the winner for the Toffees who ony lost two of their last twenty league matches that season, but only ended up in third place, ten points behind Champions Leeds.
QPR finished bottom and were relegated.

Saturday 2nd February 1963

Division III

Swindon Town 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 9,895

A close game between two sides at opposite ends of the table, and for Palace, in this terrible winter, the only game they played between 12th Jan and 9th March. As you can see from the table below, Palace had been struggling but after Boxing Day they only lost 5 games, including this one, and won 14 so that, while Swindon were promoted as runners-up to Northampton, Palace finished 11th, 11 points behind their hosts here, exactly the same difference as on 2nd Feb - promotion form!

Some action from the game, a rare shot on this date I'd have thought, given the weather. Palace keeper Bill Glazier, not in gloves, with Ernie Hunt, in gloves and baseball boots. Bert Chopper Howe is the defender. That was his real name, unlike that Chelsea chap.

London Hearts site has it as 8th March as does the RSSF site so I think that’s probably a safe bet. No idea on the program.

Low attendance due to a) the weather and b) a Wed afternoon kick-off

Stanley Matthews marked by Jack Howe - I read somewhere that he was the full back Stan found the most difficult to play against.

2nd February, 1952

Bolton Wanderers 1 Derby County 2 (Morris, Wilkins)

att: 26,596

Tuesday 3rd February 1976

Division III

Rotherham United 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Swindlehurst)

Gate: 7,633

I'm 65 today and here I am picking out a horrible defeat from my 20th birthday. I only decided to choose this game while watching MOTD tonight, where 2 sides (both Southern, playing ooop North) had 2 players sent off, resulting, in one case, in a humiliating defeat. And that's what happened here at Millmoor against the mid-table Millers. Palace were top of the table and 10 days earlier, had won at Leeds in the FA Cup 4th round. But their wheels came off in this game and 2 players (from memory, Scot Jim Cannon & Scouser Alan Whittle, but I could be wrong) were dismissed and the Southern softies were sent back home with a flea in their ear and their league leadership threatened. In fact, they slipped to 5th place and missed promotion as well as losing in the Cup semi final. For manager Malcolm Allison, that was that.

A very unique day today, only ever attended one game on this date, and they didn't issue a programme, so a couple of images I took on the day will have to suffice!

Saturday 3rd February 2018
United Counties League Division One
Olney Town 2
Oakham United 0
Drew Mitten & Jordan Appleton with the goals

3rd February, 1945

Football League War Cup Qualifying Competition

Mansfield Town 1 (Hewitt) Derby County 8 (Carter 4, Lyman 3, Duncan)

att: 7,280

Mansfield must have dreaded their games with Derby that season. The clubs met 4 times, Derby winning all 4 by an aggregate margin of 26-3.

Saturday 4th February 1950

Division III South

Bristol Rovers 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 17,259

A large gate witnessed a goalless encounter between 2 sides destined to finish in 7th place (Palace) and 1 point behind in 9th, the Pirates. In the absence of much to write about (though I do quite like the cover with its Art Deco feel), here's an amusing cartoon from the prog.

4/2/61 Division Two
Orient 3 Bristol Rovers 2
Close thing for both clubs with Orient surviving the drop by three points and Rovers by four.

4/2/67 Division One
N. Forest 1 Tottenham 1
Honours shared on the day and at the end of the season there was little between the sides as goal difference separated them with Forest finishing second and Spurs third.

4/2/89 Division Three
Port Vale 0 Wolves 0
The Title awaited Wolves at the end of the season while Vale missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference, but won the Play Offs and went up.
Vale's Steve Harper has signed the cover of this programme. He played for the club between 1987-89 and made 28 appearances.
