Bradford Park Avenue v Scunthorpe United.
A 2 - 2 draw in what was Scunthorpe’s first season as a League Club. Great cover from Park Avenue

27th January, 1974
Coventry v Derby in the FA Cup 4th round - this was the "official team sheet" which was included within the match programme in order to satisfy the law of the land (at the time) in relation to playing matches on a Sunday.
40,885 in attendance to witness a 0-0 draw, Coventry winning the replay 1-0 a few days later.
27th January, 1951
Hawker Athletic v Tunnel Sports in the London Intermediate Cup.
I think the club were the works team of the Hawker Aircraft company and played matches in Kingston-upon-Thames at a ground also occasionally used by Surrey CCC.

Wednesday 28th January 1970
FA Cup 4th round replay
Crystal Palace 1 (Queen) Tottenham Hotspur 0
Gate: 45,980
The winning goal below, fully described on the press cutting on reverse. Spurs' performance was so poor in this match and the preceding 0-0 at WHL that boss Jimmy Nick dropped Jimmy Greaves and he never played for Spurs again. I've lost count of the number of managers who've been sacked after losing to Palace - it doesn't often happen to a star player.

28/1/56 FA Cup 4th Round
Fulham 4 Newcastle 5
Sounds like the 39,200 in attendance were treated to quite a game as the hosts fron Division Two gave their top flight opponents a scare.
Newcastle would go out at the Quarter Final stage to bitter rivals Sunderland.
28/1/67 FA Cup 3rd Round
Millwall 0 Tottenham 0
The start of a succesful Cup run for Spurs begins at The Den and second Division opposition.
Spurs would win the replay 1-0 and go on to beat Chelsea in the Final.
Spurs also went on an amazing run in the second half of that season, losing just once in twenty eight matches after Boxing Day to the end of the campaign.
28/1/86 Freight Rover Trophy Round 1
Wigan 6 Rochdale 0
Quite a thumping for the visitors and the hosts would go all the way to the Northern Area Final where they would lose to Bolton.

Saturday 29th January 1955
Division III South
Gillingham 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Belcher)
Gate: 11,338
Terrible condition programme, large format, in 3 pieces but pretty rare so a keeper. Gills had a good season, finishing in a healthy 4th place, but Palace's post-war woes continued ending up in 20th, just 4 points and places off the foot. East-ender Jimmy Belcher got the Palace goal, one of his 22 for Palace in 137 matches, a fair return for an inside right. Started career at Orient and moved to West Ham, but didn't make any appearances out East so moved to the South in 1954 and settled in well, before going to Ipswich where he made only 27 starts in 3 years as they rose up the leagues. Finally had a season at Brentford in 61/2 before moving to Margate. Here he is in 1954. Met him at a Palace function about 15 years ago, a very nice fella and very fit for his age (born 1932).

29/1/66 Division Two
Rotherham 1 Bristol City 2
Signed by Rotherham's Les Chappell, Colin Clish & Gordon Morritt.
29/1/66 Division One
Stoke 1 Arsenal 3
Somebody has written the wrong score on the cover, possibly in denial, unless they were one of the many pundits that I always think are watching different games to me!
Two goals for John Radford and the only goal Don Howe scored in an Arsenal shirt wrapped up the points on the day.
29/1/66 Division One
Tottenham 4 Blackburn 0
Looks like an easy day for Spurs against the side that would be relegated after finishing bottom.
The image on the cover made me think that Sheffield United's keeper, Alan Hodgkinson, had popped along to play after doing his gardening!
Can't imagine today's keepers dressed like that...or indeed, any of the 60's keepers in fluorescent pink

[quote="Flaming Pie"]Five, l loved the days when a goalie could play in whatever outfit took his fancy. I remember the TV highlights from the Spurs v Sheff Unt game and David Colemans commentary: ‘ l don’t believe it, looks like a spectator has run on to the pitch and gone in goal. Wow, he’s bloody brilliant, what a save’ . All the fun has gone out of the game nowadays. Commentators can’t even swear anymore l’ve posted it before , but here’s a pic of a goalie at Anfield playing in a donkey jacket in the 1950s. [/quote.

Five, just checked the rule change . 1962 Rule 424 ‘A goalkeeper can not participate in a Football League or FA Cup match wearing a donkey jacket / or overcoat , unless he presents a note from his mother stating that he has been suffering from a slight chill this week and should wrap up warm. This has to be presented to the match referee two hours before kick- off . Overalls and DlY style of dress is considered by the committee appropriate’. The FA spoiling the peoples game yet again! |

Saturday 30th January 1971
Division I
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Birchenall)
Gate: 20,233
Nice shot of the Wolves youth team which had won three Youth cup games by a total of 14-0, reaching the quarter final. The front line includes Alan Sunderland, Peter Eastoe and Steve Daley. Sadly they didn't make the final.
Before the game, Wolves were 6th and Palace 9th. By the time the season finished they had moved a tad further apart - Wolves were 4th and Palace 18th. |
