Saturday 30th December 1950

Division III South

Colchester United 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 8,587

The first-ever league meeting of these 2 clubs ended in a narrow home win for the division's debutants, Palace were bottom at the time and that's where they ended some 13 points and 6 places behind the U's, who could be satisfied with the outcome of their first league season. And Palace had to be happy with being successfully re-elected for the second time in 3 seasons.

30 December 1972

West Brom were due to welcome Leeds Utd to the Hawthorns on 30 December 1972 but the game was postponed:

Local neighbours Walsall were scheduled to play Swansea at home - this game was also postponed.
However, West Brom and Walsall arranged a friendly game with a Single Sheet issued

It would appear that the League fixtures were not postponed due to weather.

Can anyone shed any light on the reason West Brom and Walsall could not play their League fixtures but could play a Friendly?

Saturday 31st December 1977

Division II

Mansfield Town 1 Crystal Palace 3 (Sansom, Swindlehurst 2)

Gate: 9,291

Action from the game showing Palace midfielder Nicky Chatterton bursting through the middle, a trademark ploy of his which earned him 36 goals in 170 games at the club before his premature departure to Millwall.
2-goal Dave Swindlehurst admires from afar. The 2 sides were promoted together in the previous season, but sadly for the Stags this was their one crack at Div 2 and they were relegated with Hull. Palace ended up safely in 9th, with a firm base for next season's promotion challenge.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
