1/10/69 Cup Winners Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Man City 3 Atletico Bilbao 0 (6-3 agg)
A routine win for City at the start of a campaign that would see them lift their only European trophy to date.

1/10/53 Charity Match
Arsenal 2 Preston 1
I have no idea what the reason for this match was and cannot see any details anywhere other than what looked like full strength line ups.
The clubs met 48 hours later in the League also with the hosts winning that one 3-2.

SATURDAY 1st OCTOBER 1960
Ipswich Town visit Elland Road and leave with the points courtesy of a 5-2 win. Only 13502 turned up to watch the game
Ipswich went on the win promotion to Division 1, Leeds having been relegated from the top Division the previous season finished 14th.

The coloured cover was only used for the 1960/61 season as poor results and seriously falling attendances resulted in economy measures and a b&w cover was used for the next 3 seasons

Interesting story on page 2 - a Doningtonian side had been drawn away to Queen's Park in the very first FA Cup but had to scratch as they couldn't afford the travel costs to Glasgow.

2/10/68 Under 23's International
Wales 1 England 3
11,084 in attendance at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground saw an England victory with the goals coming from Jimmy Greenhoff, Peter Knowles and a John Roberts own goal. John Mahoney scored the Welsh goal.
Quite a few well known names on the team sheet and the actual line up also included Colin Todd, Billy Bonds and Greenhoff in addition.

Everyone can look back and say "this was the worst season in my club's history"....when it comes to Derby, I swither between "that" Premier League season and this one. 1954/55. Relegated to the Third Division for the first time ever, 5 points gained from the last 15 games of the season etc etc.

A week after thumping Doncaster 5-0, leading some to think a corner had been turned, the trip to Kenilworth Road resulted in a 0-2 defeat which commenced a run of just 1 win in 18 games.

Luton Town 2 Derby County 0

att: 17,156

The same day, the reserves, who had started the season with 4 straight defeats and 17 goals conceded, at least managed to show a bit of defiance in holding Barnsley's seconds to a 0-0 draw.

The fact the name of their home ground still makes me laugh means I've spent too much of my life watching Carry On movies and Rik/Ade sketches....

I have to ask - does it still go under that name?

Ah cricket...true story...not played since I was at school. Mid-70s. Fancied myself as a Jeff Thomson-like bowler. One pitched off a length and caught the batsman smack in the mouth. He lost 3 teeth. I even helped him pick them up.

Trouble was, he was the son of the Aberdeen FC owner of the time - it wasn't till I was a bit wiser to how the world worked that I was told how the lad's father had ensured that banning me from the school team would be the "best course of action" given what I'd done. Daddy had influence, apparently. Especially as I was from a council house!

Every Wednesday afternoon, from then on, I was banished to the corner of the field reserved for the adolescents who were either too disinterested, too lazy or too fat to participate in sport.

I've never bowled a ball since!

3 October 1931

New Brighton v Chester

A 1 - 0 win for Chester. New Brighton has a terrible start to the season, picking up only one point from their first twelve matches.

Two programmes from today:

Carlisle United v Barrow
A retro cover based on the design of the last cover when the teams last met in the league in 1964.

Carlisle City v Birtley

There will be a crowd of around 100 today for this match

Yes, but it's just a recreation park now I think.

Tuesday 3rd October 1961

League Division III

Watford 3 Crystal Palace 2 (Smillie, Heckman)

Gate: 14,228

Advert featuring Watford's Cliff Holton - except that by then, he was a Northampton player. The return match, mentioned in the narrative, was played 8 days later and drawn 1-1.

It gets foggy on those Watford moors...... It's Johnny Byrne & Colin Meldrum emerging from the gloom

Monday 4th October 1954

Floodlit Friendly

Crystal Palace 2 (Thomas, Belcher) Queen of the South 1 (Brown)

Original owner supplied various bits of information through the programme, as we shall discover, but he got the year wrong.

QOTS were the first of four Scots visitors in a month to Selhurst, Clyde, Third Lanark and St Mirren being the others.
