22nd August 1970

Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 0

Att: 27,287

Bless her cotton socks, 50 years a fan and she gets a taxi to & from the ground thanks to the Board. Nowadays, the Board chucks you out of your seat (in my case, after 56 years) so they can form a "choir".

The photo of the previous week's game at the Hawthorns (0-0) was one of 4 showing in this otherwise very bland programme.

23 August 1947

New Brighton 0 Bradford City 2.

A taste of things to come for New Brighton as they started the season with a home defeat and finished it bottom of Third Division North and had to apply for re-election to the League.

23 August 1947

Carlisle United 4 Darlington 2.

A winning start to the season for Carlisle who produced a 4 page programme for this fixture.

The front page of the programme announced a collection for the widows and children of the 104 miners who lost their lives on 15 August 1947 at William Pit in Whitehaven. This was Cumberlands worst mining accident involving an explosion underground 2 miles from the pit shaft. 117 men had been working in the pit and there were just 13 survivors.

24/8/60 Division 3
Shrewsbury Town 1 Port Vale 1
A mid table season begins for both clubs.

Some interesting thoughts on the cover regarding the need for televised football. I don't think the writer would have been too impressed with Sky Sports somehow Laughing

24 August 1974 Carlisle United 1 Tottenham 0

Carlisle went top of the first division with their third consecutive win at the start of their only top flight season. A Chris Balderstone penalty separated the teams.

This photo of Chris Balderstone was taken in 1964 when he was with Huddersfield. Carlisle signed him in June 1965 and he left, a legend, at the end of the 1974/5 season. Chris played football in the winter and was a first class cricketer in the summer with both Yorkshire and Leicestershire He played in two test matches for England and after his playing career was over he became an umpire.

In September 1975 he finished day 2 of a match at Chesterfield where Leicestershire were playing Derbyshire on 51 not out. That evening he played for Doncaster Rovers in their one all draw with Brentford. He returned to the cricket match next morning and completed his century and took 3 wickets. I don’t think anyone else has played county cricket and a football league match on the same day.

Chris was living in Carlisle at the time of his premature death aged 59 in 2000. A great all rounder.

25/8/87 League Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Aldershot 1 Cambridge United 4 (agg 2-5)

A bit of an upset here as 4th Division Cambridge knocked out their 3rd Division opponents.
There was no giant killing in the following round though as top flight Coventry beat them 3-1 over two legs.

25/8/56 Division 2
Barnsley 1 Middlesbrough 3

An early season away win for 'Boro, with a certain Brian Clough netting two of the goals while Peter Taylor was keeping them out at the other end.
I Wonder what happened to those two......

25 August 1928

On the day Carlisle played their first league game away at Accrington the reserves played a home game in division 2 of the North Eastern League v Dipton United. Interestingly, the programme gives details of the players who would be playing for Accrington that day.

26 August 1939 Workington v Annfield Plain (North Eastern League)

Played 8 days before the outbreak of World War 2. As far as I know this was Workington’s only home issue in the abortive season. It is exactly the same format as they used in 1938/9.

29 August 1950

Southport 0 New Brighton 1

This was the final league season for New Brighton and their fourth consecutive win at the start of the season. With 8 points out of a possible 8 they couldn’t have expected to finish bottom of the league.
