In the mid 1920s Carlisle home programmes had a small history page where they included the team line ups and match results from the early years of the club when, at times, they played in both the North Eastern League and Lancashire Combination.

I have just come across brief details of a Lancashire Combination fixture in 1907 away at Brynn Central. I have never heard of Brynn (apart from in Gavin & Stacey where Uncle Brynn says Brynn means hill in Welsh).

I have done a quick google search and all I can find is that Brynn disbanded in a December 1908. Has anyone else heard of this long defunct club and does anybody know where they played?

Any help most appreciated.

No idea about Brynn I'm afraid.

But one of the Carlisle players is called Spottiswood. There was a Bob Spottiswood who played for Croydon Common & then Palace in the 1900's & 1910's.

He was born in Carlisle in 1884, and Croydon signed him from Carlisle United in 1907. It's the same guy.

Were you aware of that? I have a nice photo of him if you are at all interested.

Apology to CochesterSid............I've deleted your post by mistake...Sorry Sad

With regards to Brynn Central, and it is spelt Brynn.

The Manchester Courier, dated December 28th 1908 that Brynn Central have been disbanded due to lack of financial support.

Thanks everybody.

A bit more research (looking at old league tables) suggests they were Brynn Central and that they were based in Bryn, near Wigan. There is a Brynn St in that area. Also, the landed gentry who had the original estates in that area were called Brynne.

Just appears as though the name has been corrupted over time.

I have just found the undated postcard below which must be pre 1907 with R Spottiswood named. From that photo until September 1907 Carlisle must have had a major change in personnel as very few of the people in the postcard are named in the September 1907 team v Chorley

My first impressions on seeing the title of this post were that Brynne had been mispelt. Bryn is now part of Ashton in Makerfield where I used to catch the coach to LFC away matches from the mid 70s. Eavesway Travel operated from a small garage in Wigan rd and would later go on prrovide the official team coach for Everton, Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town and some other team I can't quite bring to mind...... Laughing
