2nd May 1990 Bristol Rovers v City Div2 (League1 ) Twerton Park
As it stood before the game a win for Rovers would send us up a draw would see City go up and a City win would make them champions.
Rovers won 3-0 and a few days later we beat Blackpool to win the title.
It left my ears ringing for days.
Good to write this on the anniversary of the day (well nearly it's after midnight now) and after seeing us win 4-1 today as well.
Since then we have known 2nd May as Blue Tuesday. _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

Three games, two involving Grimsby that I know the Barralad will also hold dear.
away at Coventry 1972-3 F.A.Cup, crowd 38,000. We lost to a last minute goal, scored ironically by Mickey Coop who's a Grimsby boy. What made this match special was the 20,000 plus fans travelling from Grimsby, an amaing spectacle. Check out the attendances for Coventry that season, we were the highest gate of the lot. It had, apparently been their biggest crowd for about 4 years, and that includes the likes of Leeds, Liverpool, Spurs and Man. Utd who were the highest crowd pullers in the division.
away at Liverpool 79-80 F.A.Cup - lost 5-0, but the whole town turned out! The headline in the Grimsby Evening Telegraph was "will the last person leaving Grimsby please turn out the lights! An estimated 25,000 went - we'd won promotion from the 4th the season before, and were going to be champions of the 3rd this season - and we had the whole of the Anfield Road end, half the Kemlyn Road stand, and an overflow of over 2,000 in the Kop. Again, people may find this staggering, but look at the Poool's attendances that season. Only 4 teams topped the 50,000 mark at Anfield, Everton, Leeds, Man. Utd and Spurs. Grimsby was the next highest with over 49,000. They played Bury in the next round of the cup, a local derby in effect, and only 33,000 there. Biggest away following I've ever seen anywhere.
2006 Scottish Junior Cup Final, Auchinleck Talbot vs Bathgate - we won 2-1, and over 6,500 fans from the village at Rugby Park, all singing our anthem "EEKA PEEKA PUKKA PO" at the top of their voices. Eeka peeka pukka po comes from a lad who was deaf sining ing "you're not singing any more" at a game in the 70's" and thinking he was singing the right words! Visiting fans always wonder what the hell's going on when it gets aired at full volume. Players sing it too at celebratrory times. |

Everton v Bayern Munich 1985 was something else.
When we won the league - particularly 85 and maybe 87. I have the video of the goals from 84-5 (also, now, the DVD) and I'm sure the crowd noise on the club video (not from MOTD) got louder as the season went on.. albeit that crowds in those days were quite poor (relative to capacity) |

Remember them well!!
I'd like to add one of my own...Liverpool v Grimsby CCLC October(?) 2001. When Jevons scored THAT goal the sound coming from the Town fans could have been heard in Manchester! Still get goosebumps when I see it on youtube. |

Internationals
England v Scotland during Euro 96 was without doubt the best atmposphere I have witnessed at a home international.
Italy away, in 1997 was probably the most intimidating.
Forest
Arsenal v Forest FA Cup Quarter Final 1988, Forest won 2-1 to put us in the semi final final for the 1st time in my lifetime, 'unbelieveable jeff' Plus Brian Rice scored!!
Bristol City v Forest League Cup Semi Final (1989??)... pished it down Forest won late in extra time on the worst pitch I had ever seen
Proper football
Hucknall Town V Bishops stortford FA Trophy semi final 2nd leg 2005... Actually to be fair the atmosphere did not compare to the other examples by a long, long way, but it is one of the most nervous I have ever felt at football. |

Sadly, the best atmosphere I have witnessed at a football match wasn't even in England or the UK even. I had been to Old Trafford and considered that the best atmosphere I had ever seen. But, a few weeks later, I won a competition on the radio to go the Milan derby and that really was frightening. The hairs on the back of my neck literally stood up. It was awesome. Not even Wembley Cup Finals gets anywhere near it. |

QPR v Oldham play off match, I was in the QPR end as a latics fan and the place was bouncing. The pitch is also so close to the stands. I have never experienced an atmosphere like this at such a small attendance, about 16,000. |

Have been to old trafford several times when leeds went there and atmosphere was like a morgue for such a huge crowd. Went to madrid and barcelona in the year we were in champions league. They were the best atmospheres i ever witnessed. In this country (leeds bias apart) i found liverpool, spurs and west ham all made lots of noise |

Anything over the old Den at Millwall was always err interesting, especially the night they played Man Utd in the real Division Two. I wished there was a platform 9 and 3/4 on New Cross Gate that evening..
Orient v Birmingham in April/May 72... now that was a night to remember and oddly enough, Brentford v Northampton in the FA Cup first round 1984. |

I was actually at that Millwall v Man U game as a 16 year old. Went with a guy called Ginger Laine with a mate of mine in a minibus. If memory serves me correctly it was a Monday night but in the school holidays. I remember being on a tube station platform and seeing a Man U fan in handcuffs coming towards us when all of a sudden a Millwall fan gave him a real punch and kick in the goolies. The police let the Man u fan go and grabbed the Millwall fan! Never seen anything like that ever again.
Best Atmospheres:
Grimsby v Everton League Cup 1979/80. Everton went one up and Town hit them with two goals in about 5 minutes.
Liverpool v Grimsby 2001 League Cup. THAT goal by Phil Jevons. For a split second no-one realised what had happened then pandemonium!!
Grimsby v Fulham League 1 Play Off Semi Final 1997/98.
Grimsby v West Brom. 1995(?) Supposedly Italian superstar Ivano Bonetti's last game. The story script dictated that he had to score the winner...
Surprisingly nothing in the last six seasons |

Deffo early season midweek.. and the German Newspaper scored the winner from the spot.. I think.
Amazingly it wasn't even all-ticket, but had to walk miles to find a pub open. Going back to North/east of the river was hampered by those United fans from up there and the Cockney Reds.. |

Mine was probably at Mol when we played Honved under the lights in November 55. The Lights were a new thing, and honved were full of internatonal superstars that had thrashed england at Wembley. The crowd was just awesome and the noise was immnse. after being 2 down at half time we came back to win 3 - 2, and the noise when the third went in was so loud. The next day the french paper 'le monde' proclaimed us champions of the world.
I was in the army at the time, and had to jump the fence and hitch a lift from lichfield to wolverhampton to see the match, and back. Got caught jumping back in, and spent 7 days in jail for it, but it was worth it.
The only modern games that came near it was the play off final at the millennium stadium v sheff utd, and to reach the prem after nearly 20 years away gave the whole of the town a lift,
and the sherpa van final at wembley v burnley was a great atmosphere, and after the game a few of us swapped coaches with a burnley coach next to us, and shared a few beers and laughs, thats how football should be. _________________ FPC Predictor Cup Winner 2013

It's an old one that, the same as the two players who played for United who were named after flowers. Most people can get Dennis Violet, but few get MacDougall!
BTW, GBL if you got a programe from the Millwall game it's worth about £20.
Ginger Laine, the old publican. Sets a few memories going...
Other great atmosphere's at Blundell Park
(1) Grimsby vs Norwich League Cup 71-2, att 23,000, 1-1 draw. Everyone thought Jimmy Thompson had scored with an amazing 40 yard header which actually dropped over the bar!
(2) Grimsby vs Exeter, same season, celebrating the championship of the 4th division. Another 23,000 crowd, plus dozens on the old Baratt Stand roof.
(3) Grimsby vs Sheff.Utd 78-9, att. 19,000, celebrating winning the old 3rd division championship, having done the 4th division the year previous. A kevin Drinkell hat trick, and a wonder goal from Joe Waters.
(4) Any game against Barnsley, Huddersfield, Leeds, Rotherham, Sheff. Utd or Weds in the late 70's / early 80's.
Away games too many to ention, but the one that stands out in my mind, was my first ever away game at Lincoln, also in the 71-2 season. A 15,000 crowd, with at least half from Grimsby. Saw very little of the game as I was fascinated with all the fighting going on around the back of the stand as the Town fans fought like buggery with the local plod to get into the Lincoln end. Think we lost 3-0, and remember all the windows of a big hotel getting put in on the way back to the station for the "special" It too had no windows in when we eventually alighted in Meggies about midnight. Scary stuff in retrospect, but absolutely exhilirating at the time when one's hormones and testosterone were in overdirve.
Also, any game at Scunny. |
