Spammers

It's getting to the point now whereby as soon as I see one spammer, I usually see two, and then I go to another site not bothering with anything else on here. I assume I'm not alone in this?


As a computer nerd I don't know how to combat it, but surely we need to be able to stop them somehow. Could some new Firewall do it Would it cost much? Would be happy to pop a couple of pounds in if you try crowdfunding to pay for it, otherwise I think the site will very quickly lose everything it's had over the years as it's now endemic on here.

Unfortunately, I'd have to agree with those sentiments. The situation appears to be getting worse by the day

If someone would tell me how to do it. I would quite happily sit here eradicating these spam bots and members who haven't contributed anything for 8 years. Its time for a cleansing of the forum.

When I sign up to other forums I have to type in a code to prove I'm not a spambot.
No idea how easy that would be to set up here but a possible answer?

Or maybe just ask for a nominal 10p entrance fee. That would desist the scammers.

Posted on the report spammers thread.

There needs to be a serious look at how the sign up is done and getting one or two more moderators and administrators involved.

Craig needs to allow "pastpirare" to become an administrator - if he's willing? - to allow him access to the workings of the forum. There also needs to be one or two moderators to work alongside "pastpirate" in helping to moderate the forum.

It's worked very well this past year or so. There's just one more downside to it and that's the spammers and their accounts.

If there's a person on here who has knowledge and understanding of how forums work, re coding etc, then they'd be useful as an admin. Finding two respectable moderators will be easier.

Time to change the way the forum works and operates.

Also, how is this run, money wise? Who pays for the servers or is it all paid for by advertising?

The last 4 entries to this board before this one are all crap. There's almost no point logging on any more.

It is an inconvenience which does need sorting; hopefully soon.

In the meantime it can be easily avoided as, hopefully, we all can tell which posts are spam.

What amuses me is the number of views that the spam postings get.

Yes sorry been away for most of last 6 weeks. Am at the match play darts tonight and back tomorrow.

Loads has been done to try and stop people registering but I will look more tomorrow at other suggestions.

I'm also more than happy to be reactive in trying to delete messages when they appear by appointing more administrators and mods. So far all changes have been proactive in trying to prevent sign ups in the first place.

As you all know I don't use this forum much any more so if pastpirate would like to email me some suggestions I can make the appointments tomorrow.

As I mentioned in another thread I have blocked signups for the time being to see what effect this has.

I have also made the following people Moderators so they should all now have access to remove messages if they require;

It's good to have more Mods sharing the burden.

Also, good to see no new sign-ups until the site can bring in some sort of tighter controls for newbies.
