I am currently researching the history York City FC, especially in relation to their time at Bootham Crescent.

One thing I have been unable to establish, despite considerable research, are the when the nicknames of the club over the years such as the Robins and Minstermen first became commonly used or adopted.

I just wondered if any fellow members on the forum have the old NOTW and Playfair football annuals and the like back to the 1930s, and whether they could kindly check if such information was provided? I can’t find any real references in the local media until the 1950s.

Thanks for any info
Paul

A piece from a newspaper after the draw for the First Round of the FA Cup in 1932-33

Another article from Yorkshire Post in October 1950.

Maybe a visit to the local library or somewhere that holds the micro film of the Yorkshire Post to find more references?

I assume this is York City in the Yorkshire League?

Above article is Dated February 1924

Here's another report, below, from September 1935

There are no mentions of the Minstermen or Robins in Topical Times Annuals or News Chronicle Annuals from 1931 to 1940 and 1946 to 1950. Or any Playfair annual in the early 1950's either.

Forgot to say, no club nicknames are mentioned, specifically, in any of the annuals.

I'm not sure if it is in the Breedon York City A Complete Record. I will check for you. I have the 1980s original and the newer issue.

Guys
Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated.

I think City were known as the minsterman until the mid 1930s but by the time we had our cup run in 1938 we had become the Robins. Much was made of us playing the Throstles of WBA during the run! A Robin also featured on the programme covers between 52-54.

We were originally Citizens before then, again don't know how or why.

The history books Cardiff mentions don't really highlight when things changed.

We were even referred to as the cathedral boys in one newsreel from 1938.

That's why I wondered if the annuals of the time gave any kind of clue.
