Bit of a long shot this, but do any collectors of Pompey, Plymouth, Crystal Palace, Bristol City or Bournemouth bits-and-bobs have a signature of Percy Cherrett? Ideally I'd like the real thing, but would also be delighted to get a facsimile.

Cherrett was a prolific goalscorer in the 1920s (see below), who ended up playing for Cowes between 1929 and 1932, where, in 109 games, he netted a remarkable 165 goals.

Aside from an autograph, any interesting tidbits you might have regarding him would also be most welcome, including anything you might know of him after 1932.

Season Club App's - Goals
1920-23 Portsmouth 67 - 36
1923-25 Plymouth A. 61 - 36
1925-27 Crystal Palace 75 - 58
1927-28 Bristol City 25 - 15
1928-29 B'mouth & Bos. 36 - 19
1929-32 Cowes 109 - 165

Cherrett pictured below (front row, centre) in the Cowes team of 1929-30.

Also in the pic (2nd from left, front row), is George Reader, his striking partner in crime. More on him in another post in the next few days...

1926/7 teamgroup

in which he's standing in the middle row, 5th left

There's this extract from "The Crystal Palace Story" (Roy Peskett, 1969)
and in the match referred to at the foot of the page, an 11-4 defeat at Man City in the Cup (20.2.1926), Percy scored twice. I know there is footage of some of that game on the net somewhere, Pathe News or some such. Have a dig around.

Many thanks all - great stuff. Hard to believe such a prolific goalscorer (at such a high level) played for Cowes for so long. We did have Cowes boy Lee Bradbury on-and-off (leave) for a season or two, mind.

Dorking - any idea if that footage is viewable online?

PPP and Pompey Phil - many thanks for posting those pictures. Would you mind if I hoiked out copies for the club collection? - they *may* appear in a book someday (especially that Pinnace card).

Yachtsmun, yes it's online under Pathe News.

Try here

But as my mate Dorking said, the camera was at the wrong end recording the 11 home goals! I suppose Percy may have been back defending at some point............

No probs happy to help......the player profile is taken from the fantastic " Pompey players" book by Roger Holmes......I'm not an expert on copyright issues but I do know the pinnace card(s) feature in a variety of books/websites.........others on this forum might be able to advise on reproducing items into publications etc and any possible copyright issues! Good Luck with the project.

Thanks for posting that team page Mr Priory - unfortunately I haven't got any Cowes progs featuring Cherrett so that's great to see.
