Looking at some of my Manchester United collection.
I noticed that both the 1946/47 and 1947/48 seasons had design changes
usually after Christmas and into the New year.
The Sponsor Afrikander had different designs but generally the same sort of message.
For example December 1947
Changed to
By January 1948.
I was wondering if any other clubs changed the design of their front cover during the same season ?
Has anyone got examples of this ? |

Just off the top of my head I can think of one obvious Blackpool season.
This was 80/1 when we started the season with Alan Ball as manager. He featured on the cover until he was sacked.
The cover then changed to a large version of the tower logo which I thought looked quite good.
I don't have access to my images at the moment but can post an example tomorrow. |

I think Doncaster Rovers had a drastic change in the season they lost league status (late 90's without checking). Started off with a glossy colour cover and ended with something like 16 pages in red and black on white normal paper. All due to financial restrictions I think. |

In season 1946-1947 The home game v Chelsea on the 18th September was the first programme to be numbered on the cover that season[4].
In season 1947-1948 the first action photos appeared inside the programme but not until number 17 v Sunderland since the War.
In season 1948-1949 An action photo appeared on the front cover for programme numbered 3 v Huddersfield Town.
Season 1950-51 It was not until programme number 7 this season v Portsmouth on 21st October that the opponents name appeared on the cover.
Not a switch during the season but the first home match of 1956-7 v Birmingham City included for the first time ever the printed token and the token sheet, this lasted until the end of the 1991-2 season. From 1992-3tokens were then printed on home match tickets.
Manchester United programmes were always sold inside the ground but they broke with tradition at the start of the 1993-1994 season and sold them in kiosks around the stadium.

Would it be fair to say then, we could take a 3 game sample over the course of a season to get a true reflection of cover design.
First home game, Christmas fixture, Final home fixture
Not sure how I could display this yet, but thoughts are welcome
I know I could do it with 2 images, but not really a fair reflection. A simply hover change would do that _________________ www.programmehut.com - The Internet Dealers

A dramatic change, almost certainly it had something to do with the introduction of the Football League Review magazine. But why mid season ????

The above is true, also during the the early 80s 82/83 & 83/84 from memory we changed cover designs midway through the season. Why, who knows ?
Pics are on my Flickr site if interested. _________________ Doncaster Rovers - Only a pub team having a laugh !

In those dark days of 1982 and the receiver became the manager.
Although the cover doesn't give anything away the inside does
I'd forgotten the receiver was our manager for a while
The cover for the rest of the season

Example of the programme page @ www.thefootballarchives.com
As the site continues to grow, this feature will get better and better for each club. Currently have around 40,000 covers in the database _________________ www.programmehut.com - The Internet Dealers

Also issue 1 and issue 20 have the exact same cover pic of Johnny Carey in the 1948/49 season. (v Sunderland and Derby County)
One introducing him as Captain and the later one presenting him as footballer of the year.

Completely useless information, but I played cricket against Graeme Hedley, the Hartlepool no 7 in the post above. Excellent cricketer |
