With the weight and cost of modern day programmes, im thinking of stopping my annual subscription for next season
The joy is in older programmes, but i feel ill miss out if i don't get modern day and my collection will never be complete
Have many people stopped the modern day collections and actually regretted it ? |

I stopped collecting after 50+ years when Palace reached our Centenary in 2005. I thought that was an appropriate place to stop. The main reason for this was shelf-space, which has since been used up by press photos so in effect programmes have been replaced by photos - I had to be collecting something and chose my new love, press photos.
Have I missed it? Not in the slightest, not even at the match where I always had the prog at hand for mystery players, referee etc. You can get these on your phone although at Selhurst the signal is so bad that doesn't always work.
This season, however, the club have awarded me 2 pages in every programme for a photo spread and as a result gave me a free programme for each game, so this season I am collecting again - plus there are "Collectors Cards" inside the back cover so I'm collecting those too. And I've run out of space so I have no idea where they are going to go.
Good luck mate, it won't be easy but it can be done! Find something else - tickets, press photos, etc - much easier to look after. Plus the older programmes are so much better anyway. |

Each close season I think about calling it a day for modern issues but then carry on as normal in the new season.
This may be a good time to call it a day, considering our current predicament, but then next season there are likely to be programmes against clubs we've never played before.
I would want to add them to the collection plus any cup ties, friendlies or specials.
Then if Blackpool started issuing cards or stickers I would definitely want to carry on collecting.
We may even see a reduced size programme next season so all in all I imagine my post war collection will be complete up and until at least the end of 2015/6. |

I stopped collecting my clubs home & away league programmes at a specific milestone, the start of the millennium. Similar to Pete the main reason was space although the cost was also a factor. Nowadays every piece of news or statistical facts are well documented on the internet so I don't need a programme to obtain information. The only bit of match day ephemera I try to obtain to commemorate a game is a team sheet or ticket. Everyone to their own, but I definitely have no regrets in not collecting my clubs modern day issues. Pre 1955 is a different story though. |

Get married in my case. Sold up in 1997, regretted it ever since. Tried to start a couple of times since then but never had the same enthusiasm for it as before.
Even now still look on ebay and almost click to buy it now or make a bid. I'm never bothered about the programmes on an actual matchday and can walk past a seller without even thinking of buying one but looking round on ebay and even on here at times makes me think about starting again. _________________ ebay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/footballstickershop

If clubs went back to issuing a 24 page programme costing a humble quid, I doubt any of us would be asking this question.
I gave up bothering with the current season issues back in 1997 and only returned to doing so some 5 years later so I've got big gaps in the collection for that 5 year period that, considering the postage costs involved, make it prohibitive to make inroads into. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Even collectors it seems are shunning modern programmes. Once you break the habit I think you'll be pleased. The irony is , they have never been a better read. Some are excellent. |

collectors never stop collecting, do not know where treble's non collector collectors fit in but I will never stop no matter how much space they take up, before I go to the great bound volume in the sky just hope it is in between seasons but that I picked up all the pre-season friendlies first!
half way on flickr going to make more of an effort but it is coming in faster than I can upload of late!
My advise is do not do it
this is why www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterunitedman1/sets |

STOP!!!!!!
I have never even thought of stopping.
I enjoy each new issue as much as ever and reckon I can fit another 20 seasons in the dinning room before I have to have a rethink over storing them.
I am a bit strange though. Just ask the wife. _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

My wife keeps refusing knee replacement surgery, I said what if you end up you can't walk and there's a fire? By the time I get the pets and my programmes out, it might be too late to come back for you. |

Not allowed Rovers stuff in the front room MM1 (Except a painting of Eastville that I somehow managed to squeeze in) Can't be arsed to store them upstairs so the back room is a compromise between us. _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

I made a concious decision to stop collexting full seasons years ago, partly due to storage but mainly cost and the fact that the modern programme does not have the character of the pre 1970 stuff.
However, not want to stop collecting I now concentarate on the 1st & Last Home game of each season, plus all cup games and specials like European ties, testimonials, play offs etc (home and away). I find this gives me a great cross section of programmes and also all the statistical data and much lower cost and storage hassle.
I have met many collectors who have stopped/sold up only to regret the decision years later. |

I think for people like Leslie who have everything ever printed about their team , then stopping is not an option. For mere mortals , stopping is not so bad . For example if you have every home and away from say 1960 to date , I think it would be better to go backwards not forward. Of course if you have space, time , money and energy then swinging both ways is fine..... what happened to Mr Gas ? |

I don't see a time when I'll stop collecting Alnwick Town programmes. Being programme editor I don't have a choice but to produce them at the minute anyway, but I (along with another collector) am always on the lookout for more programmes.
Sunderland programmes though, I went through a stage of trying to collect everything, but the bairn put an end to that. Simply not enough money or space. In the end I've decided to just collect programmes from the games I have attended, the 73 cup run, 3rd division season and European programmes (which isn't many!!!). _________________ Currently under construction - Alnwick Town, Percy Rovers and Aydon Forest programmes @ Flickr http://www.flickr.com/alnwicktownafcprogrammes/sets |

I have to say 1878-1879 is a tad difficult, still looking for the elusive postponed v Ardwick the one on the Tuesday night that kicked at 4pm, I here the horse conked out on the way and the 12 programmes were never delivered-drat-other than that as Wullie says........... |
