Does anyone use a specialist provider to insure their collection? or an addon to a normal policy?
the reason I ask is that my current insurer, legal & general, declined to quote when I told them about the collection.
3 years of bedroom banditry/two bob fish & chipping have led to this sad state of affairs! |

I have used a specialist company for years
http://www.mjacroydon.co.uk/
They don't need a definitive list of your collection , your premium is based on the value and the collection is covered in transit. I've never had to use it , which I guess is when you will find out if it is any good - god forbid anyone is in that position. |

I am due to renew my insurance with MJA very shortly. Like Ramsfan has stated they seem very good and easy to deal with. With all insurance though you only find out how good the company is when you need to make a claim. I have been with them for quite a few years and thankfully have not had to make a claim. Has anybody had to claim or know of anyone who has? |

I've queried this (several times!) with my insurer, RSA, who assure me my collection is covered under the general policy (i.e. the 'house contents' bit of my cover). The policy specified stamp and coin collections need to be separately listed, but provided individual items don't exceed the 'high value' limit, then a programme collection is dealt with as a load of individual items, rather than a single 'unit' (which is useful, as in total I'm way over the high value limit).
I've got in writing that I'm covered; however, if I ever need to claim, cannot imagine what difficulty this would entail, and heaven knows how to put a value on it, let alone prove this, especially given unique nature of some items. |

Mine is also covered under my general contents insurance, though I did have to up the limit quite considerably. Like previous contributors, I'm not sure how good the cover is and hopefully I wont ever need to claim. From memory they asked me to list the number of programmes in excess of £500, the rest is covered under a blanket policy.
Hope this helps |

This has come to mind recently since my collection is now worth a bit, even more so in the last week when we had firemen in our building running upstairs with a hose.
I don't trust insurance companies to pay out anywhere near the value, I am thinking the best option is to make safe as best you can for your most expensive items. |

I had specialist insurance for my collection but sadly they have now announced that they will no longer support my collection (after 12 years ). I have spoken with my normal house contents insurer and they say that as it is largely a paper based collection it would be an excluded item from my house contents cover. (I assume stamp collections would be similar excluded).
I have now manged to get an online quote from HISCOX -annual premium is 0.425% which is about what I was paying before |

Just to clarify - the reason why stamp and coin collections are generally excluded is because stamps and coins are so "portable" - in a burglary they would be easily thrown into a bag and carried off whereas a programme, book or magazine collection would be much heavier and less likely to be stolen

Hi
Since my original post, a long time ago, I think they no longer offer such a good policy.
I have now moved mine to https://hwiuk.com/specialties/ which is where many antique dealers have their insurance.
Very easy to set up and cover everything, even if it is held in several locations. |

I spoke to Santander (my home contents insurer) about programmes (and records) earlier this year.
They told me I'm covered under my standard policy and they didn't need a list of any individual item over, say, £100 though excesses obviously apply.
i was quite surprised at that response so did go into it in some detail but they were adamant that my collection was covered under the terms of my policy. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

I used AWI for a year (2019-2020) but was put off by their payment process. They insisted on a cheque with no online payment option and all correspondence to do with the policy was through the post. I am now with Hiscox https://www.hiscoxcollections.com/. Instant cover done online and premium was lower too.
