Hello all,

I have decided that I am not going to collect many more home league programmes and concentrate on Cup/European or away games as these seem to be more interesting.
Does anyone else agree with this theme?

I only collect derby programmes (v Hibs), Cup Semi/Finals and European programmes these days as far as Hearts are concerned. I might only be adding four new ones to the collection next season!

Which club do you collect?

If I did that for Posh I wouldn't have a collection!

I guess at some point I'll have to stop collecting league games mainly due to the fact so many things in there are more freely (and up to date) on the net. I still have vague ideas that it will go digital and paper programmes will be confined to history

""paper programmes will be confined to history"" .
I agree with this argument , never used to. But reading an article about only 10/20 years from now, the speed of new technology will be frightening. Books ,dinner menus, newspapers, football programmes , letters all gone. Printed material will be a thing of the past ( and hopefully very collectable). Of course it could be a load of bollocks , but who would think 25 years ago you would book you match ticket over the internet and use a swipe card to gain access to the ground ?

I would argue that the programme has never been a necessity where a ticket was. The fact a ticket has been replaced merely indicates a progression in technology.

Yes I'm sure a programme could equally be replaced by smartphone updates and other internet based services, but I still think the programme has plenty of years life left in it, as not every level of the game is going to embrace technology, as long as some form of matchday memorabilia be it a teamsheet or programme exists I'm sure I will continue to purchase, I think the natural process will be they get smaller once again, back to the 'good old days'

I stopped collecting current season programmes about 10 years. Getting too big to store so have concentrated on prewars and away cup games to add to my existing homes collection. Plus got into tickets and teamsheets.....and menus and club christmas cards and season tickets

One of the keys points I read was computer chips will cost next to nothing , we'll use them and then throw them away, so in time even the smallest of non league clubs will be able to produce a digital programme. People will probably scan a bar code at the ground and hey presto a programme. I don't claim to understand it all, but when it arrives change will happen so quickly.
People will have to print off their programmes if they want a paper copy.
My main concern , what if a modern printer can produce a perfect copy of a old document ( programme) so that it would be impossible to tell the difference from an original. I know there are ways to tell at the moment , like smell , type paper etc. but in the future who can tell ? That would be terrifying for collectors of all paper based items , stamps, postcards , programmes.

Regarding the programme-less football ground, I have been hearing the concept of a “paperless office” for as long as I have been working, it has not happened yet, and it probably never will.

I do think technology will have an on-going impact in how programmes evolve over the next 20 years, but will we see them disappear completely at the top levels? I doubt it. We can’t even get decent 3G coverage across the whole of the UK for starters, let alone 4G, and as for fast broadband…..

I collect Spurs and have also started to collect F A Cup Final programmes. There is something about a programme you buy at a stadium for a match you are going to rather than one you obtain elsewhere for your collection.

Fellow Spurs and Cup Final collector and as you say there is something about going to a game and buying a programme that is all part of going to the game.

I remember being younger and going games and getting the programme was a delight, I'm now in my 30's and go to sports events all over the south of England and god forbid anyone who says they have not got a programme.

I went to a Cardiff ice hockey game (there second string team in the ENL/NIHL) and they didn't produce a programme, everyone within view got an earful about not producing a programme, my mates didn't want to stand near me as I was in a foul mood, in the end the day was saved by the Referee who photocopied the matchday stats sheet which listed the team roster and the goals/points/penalties for the game and gave me the original as my version of the programme/teamsheet

Trying to collect every programme for every game causes a number of problems not least cost and storage.

I gave up collecting full seasons, unless it is a Promotion/Championship season, in the mid 1970s and concentrate on 1st & Last league game, Play-off where applicable, all cups (H&A), European (H&A).

I find this gives me all the League stats for the season, a great cross section of teams from the Cup games etc. It is more affordable and easier to store.

Isn't the quote "A paperless office will arrive the same time as a paperless toilet"?

Modern technology should make it easier and cheaper for more clubs - especially those at the bottom end of the pyramid to produce programmes, albeit not as we may recognise them, than ever before.

But are we seeing this trend? Are clubs who never produced a programme years ago now producing one?
