Why, when I try to send a PM to this person by pressing on the relevant icon under his message, does a message appear saying no such user exists?

I have just clicked on PM and it takes me to the message screen as normal.

I haven't gone any further than that though.

Actually it's once I click on send that the message appears above the text I've written.
