I know this sort of thing has happened before but I've been watching press photos on Ebay for the best part of a decade now and don't think one's gone as high as this before. It does of course have that famous Chelsea goalkeeper in it, going for a cross, bless him, and I guess the 2 notorious bidders concerned are too broke to be away on holiday now.

All the more crazy when this superb photo of the same club in action scoring a beautiful goal in a fantastic FA Cup Final replay goes for £15.

By the way, when I set my website up in 2006, I sold one of these bidders about a dozen press photos of Peter Bonetti for maybe £8 each, which is what they are really worth. Not that I'm bitter!

Finished at £1295 and my old customer won it!

I'm sure they'll be very happy together.

A mate of mine has Bonetti's 1970 England trackie jacket in his collection of match worn shirts & kit, I 've told him a few times to pop it onto eBay if he fancies paying his mortgage off! Laughing

Press photos I really don't understand at all. I have quite a few ( thanks Pete ). The values puzzle me. Some seem amazingly cheap and some incredibly expensive. It appears to me, unlike programme or ticket stub collecting , very haphazard in prices sought. I generally try not to pay over £20 for any photo now. There are very famous, iconic photos I have seen listed for £50 plus. I'd be tempted to buy the "" originals"" if that is what they are. But as I say, my experience is limited. It seems a neglected part of memorabilia collecting as a whole.
I think with the Bonneti situation. You have two vey rich egos , both after the same limited, not spectacular items. Very odd indeed.

This one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHEL.....27d41d2d69

is almost the same as today's in terms of quality of action - there are 7 years between them but the same players and all it proves is that in 7 years Bonetti still couldn't catch a cross - but this one is only 6x4".

2 egos the size of Jupiter. And some very lucky Ebay traders, of which I am not one.

Strange it is only Bonetti's press photos that make the money. If you search the completed listings there are loads of unsold Bonetti items.
