Post subject: Pre First World War Barnsley Programmes

Just a heads up to anyone that's interested that I am expecting a load of scans from a collection of pre 1st World War Barnsley programmes from a chap with an amazing collection. I am told there are programmes from games against opponents such as Woolwich Arsenal, Leeds City, Leicester Fosse and Glossop North End amongst others.

The programmes are not for sale, but will be made available to view on my flikr site hopefully soon.

So keep an eye out !!

Just received the scans of the 1914-15 Bound Volume which contains 33x 16 page Barnsley FC Home programmes for 18x Second Division matches and 15x Central League matches (1x is a double issue), plus a match in aid of Belgian Refugees.

The programmes are numbered 1 - 33 on the cover, therefore there are no numbered editions missing.

The Second Division programmes contain every Home except Birmingham and include beauties such as Leeds City, Woolwich Arsenal, Glossop (their last season), Leicester Fosse etc.

The Reserves are missing 4x home games (unfortunately missing are Manchester Utd Res and Liverpool Res (both being midweek matches and therefore probably not full 16 page editions issued). However apart from matches against other Reserve teams there are also beauties against pre League First XI's of Southport Central, Rochdale, Crewe Alexandra, Port Vale & Stalybridge Celtic.

The Belgian Refugees Benefit match was between Barnsley Past & Present and includes George Stacey, George Travers & George Wall (Manchester United) amongst others.

There is a scan of all 16 pages in every edition.

Makes for fascinating reading - and let's face it whenever do you see (never mind own) a Barnsley First World War Home !!

Fascinating reading - and I've only gone through the Stockport issue so far.
Great insight into what was going on in the country at that time. Little wonder that the War features prominently.

Thanks for these.

Thanks Derby,

When reading the early season issues there seems to be a determination within the game to keep football going during the Conflict where you can tell from the comments that others obviously wanted the games to stop.

By the way there is a programme versus Derby County for the match played on Friday 2nd April 1915

I'll look forward to seeing that scan.

Did you notice the one-liner, next to the entry prices, stating that if anyone fancied paying more than the stated admission fee, then they were free to do so?

I wonder what the FA had to say about that!

Great reading in these old programmes. Clubs were a lot more honest (or, perhaps, less concerned with litigation) back then.

Full set of 33x 1914-15 Home programmes now uploaded - a total of 297 images with all 16 pages from every programme.

I have also uploaded 30x Home front covers from season 1921-22 - again these are from a Bound Volume with internal pages to follow.

In all I have access to scans from 10x pre War bound volumes so there will be lots more to be uploaded in due course.

Thanks Sharrow,

There are home programmes from 3 out of the 5 seasons when United dropped into Division 2 in the mid to late 1930s

As a Barnsley born Sheffield Wednesday supporter I enjoyed browsing through these. A great find - thank you for sharing.

I find programmes published before the age of spin to be far more interesting than today's sterile offerings.
