I spoke to Sharrowblade about this. Although I am looking forward to the time when I only buy a programme every now and then because there are so few run of the mill & even specials that I don't have,I am still really enjoying the variety of programmes and the inexpensive ones I buy nearly every day,the great surprises when I get a bargain, the great result of kind souls helping you out and when people who are not collectors find out about your passion bung you some that is lying in a drawer.
I just love this hobby more each day. |

I miss the days when I used to be able to get a good few programmes to fill the gaps in my collection. The most I have added in recent times has been the very odd one. Even when I get a Finn Harps collection now chances are the only thing I get are improver progammes..not that this is necessarily a bad thing.
Ah well only around 60 homes needed back to 1969 when they entered the League of Ireland...and I reckon for about 20-30 of them no programme was issued. |

I miss having a wants list 3 pages long and being able to find something from virtually every catalogue that came thru the post.
But I really miss the very very early days when the latest "bargain bundle" from Steve Earl would arrive. Would spend days pouring over early 70s Coventry, Man City + Hull programmes thinking I was the owner of something really special
Which, to a kid of 14, they really were. Never mind the pecuniary value.
It's not quite the same these days having to go thru auction listings and EBay. I don't have the patience anymore for one thing. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Hello There
I have been trying for a long time to find out information about a match played in Ireland between Finn Harps and Manchester United on the 11th November[a Sunday] in 1973.
I have never seen a programme-have you?, do you know why they played?, was it a United first team?, or reserve or youth side playing this friendly?, was it common to play in Ireland on a Sunday as it was certainly not here back then.
The only reason i even have any evidence of a match taking place is this http://flic.kr/p/eDYMVZ
So any help you can offer would be appreciated, also of course if any other forum members may have some information all will be gladly received.

My collecting days started seriously in the mid 80's when I was about 12 or 13
The 1st ever Rangers shop on the corner of Copland Rd and Mafeking St (Its a Ladbrokes now) had a programme stall inside it
There was a woman who sometimes worked the stall and was very nice to me , 10 x 1970's Rangers Programmes for a £1.00 and she would always let me have 5 for 50p plus she would regularly throw in a freebie with a wee wink saying "Keep that under yer hat "
When I was flush I would buy 5 x 1960's for a £1.00
On the flip side there was a guy who was a complete self righteous and patronising sod who would rather talk big about programmes with his pals than help you out
There was actually 2 guys who sold programmes at the famous Barras market in Glasgow, every Sunday I was down there with what I had left from my YTS money and while all my mates were away roaming the shops for the latest fashions I was blowing what I had left from my hard earned £32.50 a week on programmes
I remember the guy upstairs in the Barras's market took one look at me a said " Your Dad used to bring here when you were are nipper " and he was right
I do miss the days of wading through boxes and boxes of programmes at stalls and fairs trying to find that bargain but I think the internet has saved the hobby , especially ebay |

My early days being 13 picking up ex media issues from a guy at the road big bundles for £10 out of my paper round money in 2003. I was then addicted to collecting and someone at villa park used to help me out with any bits I wanted he had his own yellow box outside with loads of bits in not just the match day programme it's a shame it's no longer filled with these bits. Then in 2004/05 I collected the chelsea whole season home & away with team sheets and Stubbs this was great fun being young picking them up every week off ebay at the end of the season I sold them on ebay in 3 separate lots making £1200 I was stunned. I just wish I was around in your days when more exciting job lots used to come up for sale, now you have to go through ebay for hours to find maybe 1 good lot a week if your lucky. |

"Dear Sir, further to your advertisement, I have 100 assorted Derby home and away programmes, 1945 to 1955 which i don't need. I will accept £20 for them all, if you are interested"
.....I miss receiving replies like that.
Everybody's a bloody expert nowadays.
I blame Arthur Negus. He started it all. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Kollectables in Parnie st was the last but thts away now
Like someone said earlier ,everyones an expert now ,looking for mega bucks for the commonest items !
I even had a guy at a car boot sale once asking me for £3 a whip for early 1980s Rangers homes
I dont miss the programme monthly bidding scenario , postal bids and then never hearing back |

Somebody told me about Kollectables in the Saltmarket. I went round and it was boarded up.I had been in before but never saw any programmes on display. I actually had an idea of selling at a car boot sale. There's one near Ibrox on a Saturday in a hall (I don't know if it's still going) I think it may be easier to sell to non collectors selling run of the mill items at a half quid each or something because most are worth a look just for a wee read. |

In answer to the question avove which I've just seen and finnharpshistory can do a much better job but here is my understanding.
The match never happened. It was arranged and tickets were printed. I'm not aware of a programme but it is possible one was done albeit unlikely. |

Hi Leslie, the game never took place for various reasons depending on who is telling the story. Tickets were printed as you have seen, and then the game was cancelled the official reason was "that United players were away on international duty and Tommy Docherty wanted to bring a full strength side". United promised to come back either at the end of the season or the following pre-season but that never happened.
I cannot definitively say that a programme wasnt issued (I was only 8 at the time) but as garyspain says below it is unlikely, Harps were always cash strapped and they wouldnt have printed a programme until they were sure the game was taking place. I have never seen one and know of two other serious collectors who both have the Bursapor ECWC game (another long story) but dont have one from the postponed game.
PM me your email address and I will send on article I did for the programme for the Harps legends V Man Utd legends game in 2009 which explores the 1973 game. |

I never thought i had to recount things such as this all over AGAIN as i had written something ages ago when a similar question arose, and besides i thought the general consensus is on this forum is anything to do with MUFC is a snooze subject anyway, but undeterred i shall continue to post.
As regards your own description of yourself you have perhaps saved others saying it |
