Post subject: Genuine FA Cup winners medal or not?

Hello all, I am new here but I was wondering if any of you could help. I have in my possession an FA Cup winners medal. It looks quite real to me and I see that Bonhams has one for sale on the 19th of this month that is practically identical. It is roughly 32mm in diameter and is not engraved on the reverse. Would anyone be able to advise as to whether they think it is genuine or not? Are they all solid gold or plated? Where should they be hallmarked? And I have tried scouring the internet for reproductions but I can't find any that look so identical as this one. Any help would be really appreciated guys!

Looks very similar to a 1911 FA Cup winners medal like the one below at this link, the only difference is the one at Budds had 1911 engraved on to it. They were 15ct gold

Maybe contact Graham Budd and have him check it out for you,

I had seen that one also. The only difference is that the auctioned one has hallmarkings on the top of it and mine doesn't. I was wondering if maybe later ones weren't hallmarked or something like that? to me it looks identical to this one http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21125/lot/263/

Where did you get it from Jack and how much did you pay.
About 20 years ago Fattorini medal makers of Birmingham had some blanks and they put them though Fellows Auction in Brum

I bought the medal at an auction actually, it was part of a bulk lot and was within the box. It cost about £60 or £70 for the entire box and there was loads of interesting stuff in there. By blanks do you mean they weren't inscribed like my one? Do you know what these blanks were made of and are fattorini medal makers the official makers of the medals? Are they worth anything? Thanks!

If they are not gold then they are not worth a lot

hi, Jack, that looks like a nice little medal you have there.

I collect football medals, but do not have an fac winners medal. All genuine medals are made of gold and are hallmarked on the reverse just above the word FOOTBALL. From the style of the medal you have it looks like it should be hallmarked 15ct.

Have you got the presentation box? It always gives the details of the maker inside, which could help to identify if it was genuine.

Just because it hasn't got a date to the front or a winners name etc, on the back does not necessarily mean it is a copy.

regards, Mark
