Your help is required please.

At a recent interesting visit to the Preston programme fair i was shown a Stewards enamel badge from Manchester United from the 1920's.
I already have a similar badge in my own collection, albeit nowhere in as good condition,as that on offer.
I also have in my own collection a very similar badge marked "Committee"
I am not a badge man normally and i honestly can't remember where i acquired my badges.
I knew they were old(ish) but did not realise they were 1920's which was the early years at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United museum believe that my "Committee" badge is almost certainly from the ground committee but couldn't tell me any more as they don't have anything like it in the museum.
The only help they could give me was to clear my thoughts on the rarity of the committee badge.
On the assumption that there would be more stewards than ground committee(they suggested (10;1) what might be the approximate anticipated value for insurance purposes.

My second question is related to the badges above.
What are they?
I suspect they are from the same source as the other badges but can't be sure.
They are made of cork and have a large safety pin on the reaer.
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi,

Not sure if it is relevant but there was a thread on here last year about Manchester United Stewards Badges. Not sure if they are the same as yours.

yes i remember seeing them going round and round.

i presumed it was the same one.
there is nothing to confirm exactly what it is but it just looked to me to be a bit of crap "knocked up" in somebody's workshop with a bit of scrap.

anybody else any idea on my cork badges?
can any of our badge specialists confirm if cork was used in any otehr clubs in the 1920's,1930's or 1940's?

looking at the badges again they probably are embossed leather although the leather appears to be possibly sat on cork but that is a laymans description.
here are the rear of the badges

It's an F.A. Stewards badge. Stewards for F.A. (mostly Wembley) matches (eg England games and the FA Cup Final, Amateur Cup Final etc)would have been given it to wear in the days long before big flourescent yellow coats were the uniform.

Rare - yes fairly, but not impossible to build up quite a collection of them in a relatively quick space of time if you have them money.

I guess if your team made the FA Cup Final then you also might well want that years badge, as I suppose they're like the earliest 'matchbadges'

There were ones done for the 1966 World Cup too - Steward and Sperintendent. They go for very good money.

Thanks for your help.

Your rough valuation on them would be appreciated as well as a valuation on the "Committee" enamel badge

Just a thought but is it possible they are war time issues ? I seem to remember seeing a ? wooden FA stewards badge made during the war when there were supposedly more important things to do with metal ! I have a Norwich City NorthWalsham Supporters Club badge made fron something that looks like formica thats 40s or early 50's
