With the forthcoming Cup Tie scheduled for next Monday night, here is a trip down memory lane when Reading last appeared at Old Trafford in the F.A. Cup.

First United were drawn away at Reading and scraped a 1-1 draw in front of around 26,000 at Elm Park on 8th January, then 4 days later the replay at Old Trafford saw United come to their senses and see them off 4-1 in front of just 24,578.

A 4 page proframme only was issued for the replay which is not the easiest to find even nowadays mainly because it was played at 2pm on a week day!

Anyway take a look at the programmes, ticket-some nice items:

There have also been other times when United met Reading in the FA Cup such as 1936-7 home in the 3rd Round which i will feature over the next day or so and then there was in 1926-7 3 games home and away and eventually it got settled in a 3rd match at Villa Park!, here is something from the final match which saw Reading triumph 2-1 and the 1-1 and the 2-2 earlier draw. Attendance for this 3rd game at Aston Villa was only 16,500.

Furthermore United and Reading met in the 3rd round in season 1911-1912 and again the match ended up a draw at Reading with United winning 3-0 in the replay, here are a couple of interesting items from the first match at Reading on January 24th 1912

There was ANOTHER 3rd round match in 1935-6 at Reading where United won 3-1, with a good crowd of 25,844 turning out and i will feature this later this week end also.

I just love the FA Cup.
I always have.
I don't want to jump the thread and as manchesterunitedman is going to post later on the cup matches in 1935/36 and 1936/37 i will leave them alone.
As mentioned already there were 3 games in season 1926/27.
You have already been provided with a scan of the second replay at Villa Park so here are some other items
First game at Reading was a 4 page programme with all adverts. No editorial whatsoever.
I have shown the cover and team page

next up is an action photo from the game

finally the team page from the replay at Old Trafford

if anybody wants to see the whole of these programmes then visit

Some good stuff there as well Ray.

Talking about the FA Cup, I still think it has it`s charm but such a shame that big bucks dictate that United v Reading should take part in this great competition on a Monday evening !!! Confused

what annoys me is that a game will take place "after" the draw for the next round has taken place.

the fact that it involves my team is more significant to me but i just hate it.

how can you expect players to fully concentrate on a game on a Monday when they already know exactly what to anticipate in the next round if you win

What a great read even the adverts, especially the back page!
Club comments, Chairmen says this is the first match he has missed in 12 years as he is in bed with the flu![or was it flo!!], even a piece from both United and City captains after the Derby game the week before, good value and would give the sipporters enough to read for sure.

More to follow, need to locate it all...
