First of all, let me say that I'm not trying to take business off reputable programme restorers! However, there are readily accessible items from that trade that are on the open market that can be used to do the slightly less difficult programmes in your collection. I've got a number of them, nd was wondering if anyone else did similar...and could we swap notes on best practice etc?
Filmoplast is the archivist's invisible tape, and brilliant for doing small tears, raggedy edges etc. Not to be confused with invisible tape which can be bought from most High St stationery retailers, it is of archive quality, and is sued by most museums and Libraries for restoring paper. A really good modest financial outlay will see you with enough of the stuff to last you donkey's years.
Various dirt removers - ideal for slightly grubby pages, and a decent application, over time, can usually bring them up to scratch. Doesn't work miracles on heavily dirty paper, but good where there's what can be described as "slightly grubby" on a fold or whatever.
De Solv It - for taking off sellotape etc. Am awaiting my first delivery of this from [email protected] along with another white spirit based removal agent for taking off the residual tape.
Am hoping my relatively modest outlay stands me in good stead - it has so far - and does anyone else have tips to share on this matter?

Don't upset anybody in your house and then go for a bath.
It might not be water you're getting into and then you couldn't enter the Big Willie competition

Believe it or not, I got the products this morning, and on the sellotape remover was the warning "Do not drink" Not too worried about being an active entrant in the biggest willy competition, at our age I'm more concerned about a bigger prostrate!
Anyway, have tried out the items on a small number of Northampton Town friendly programmes from 49-50 through to 53-4 that I purchased at the last Sportingold auction without fully reading the description as they all had brown tape on both sides of the spine. I was in one of those auction lulls, having my lunch, when I heard the lot come up and thought "they're cheap" only to discover why when I latterly saw the description.
I gingerly took the 1949-50 programme and very carefully applied the tape remover and left for about 10 to 15 minutes to let it soak in properly. Was a bit worried when a big damp brown stain started to appear, but this has since dried out and disappeared. Did it work? Yes, I've managed to get all the tape off, with no staining on old tape marks left behind and the programme is now in very good condition, and the wee bit of work has probably seen it's value increase, and the ability to sell it increase many fold.
To be honest, I'm over the moon with the result, and have now applied the same treatment to the other 3 programmes and leaving them to soak up the application before going back to them to try and remove the tape. Will report back later on.....

Update on the programmes. All four of them now look decidedly better than they did before, and for a first attempt I'm now hooked - realising that it's perfectly possible to do minor restoration. There's no way I'd attempt anything else restoration wise as I believe that certain people have years of skill, experience, and training to be able to perform the task to a very high professional degree. However, knowing that I can now do tape removals, and their residue, opens up a whole new world of bidding for such items, safe in the knowledge that with the right materials and some TLC, they can be restored safely. Easy Easy Easy

Doesn't sound too good if using it results in legal issues

Can you give us abit more info on this John- product name would be handy and level of success if used.

Cheers

Any update on this John, sucess rate, product names, before/after pics etc?

I'm tempted to give it a bash on some of my run-of-the-mill items that need a bit of attention.

Hi James, a few of the items I use include the following:-

Filmoplast - an acid free archivist's tape, the kind used for restoration old manuscripts etc, and the choice of librarians. It's like "invisible tape" only much finer, and it's very difficult to notice on smaller repairs.

Sellotape remover - as name implies, it removes tape. It's a spirit based liquid, so won't stain or crinkle paper upon application.

De-solv it - after using sellotape remover, this removes any of the sticky brown residue left behind from the tape. As above it's spirit based, and can be liberally applied.

I've got an order book somewhere with these in, from a company that specialises in these products. I also use a couple of their cleaning materials for removing "slightly grubby" marks, especially on programme covers. When I find the book I'll let you have the details.

Cheers John, I do have some programmes that have some minor tears that doesn't really need the attention of an expert restorer, but a bit of tape would help stop the tear getting worse.

Email me your address and I'll send a piece of tape up for you to try (it's got backing paper so won't stick to the envelope!)
