Hello There

Yes i have seen this on ebay already.

The condition is not great for sure so is your question rhetorical? are you saying the price is too high or the price is too high for the condition?.
Personally i think the price for the programme in a better condition would be much higher and over the years it has sold for a good deal more than this from memory.
Other United collectors on the forum keep records of United items so maybe they can advise further-i suppose for a Luton Town programme although not one where Luton are actually playing is high for 1955-6 season but you have to realise this is involving the original Busby Babes and holders of the FA Youth Cup playing in a match against Bedfordshire Youth X1. For United starred Eddie Colamn, Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Ken Morgans who passed away 2 weeks ago, Wilf McGuiness,Shay Brennan to name a few who all became household names and some who persihed 3 years later at Munich.
The Tomlinson Tropy match was held between the winners of the FA Youth Cup and Bedfordshire who were the holders of the F.A. County Youth Cup and this was set up by the then late George Tomlinson who was a former minister of Education who was a keen football follower especially at his level and it appears the cup was played for so that his name was kept up in youth football circles.

To quote from inside the programme "We print the two sides on another page as we have every hope that they will appear, but Duncan Edwards whom we all would like to see is not certain because of Army committments but is hoping to obtain leave of absence"-Edwards was just 19 years old but had already made his full England debut a year before! such was the sensational player that he was at that time-everyone wanted to see him and there was no sky sports then for sure!.

I attach a copy of one of the programmes from my collection, this was the former proprty of Mrs. Tomlinson and she has annotated at the bottom "Presented Cup + Special Plaque to Manchester United"

MUFC Youths also played other Tomlinson Cup matches at home to Sheffield and Hallamshire Youth X1 in 193-4 and also away at Liverpool 1954-5.

Manchester United Youth team won the FA. Youth Cup from inception in 1952-1953 for the first 5 years, I do not know of any matches played for the Tomlinson Trophy after this match at Luton Town in 1956.
I know you never asked for all of this flashhat but i wanted to give a little background on the match, competition and the programme not so much to justify it's pricing but to show why it is a sought after item for a collector of United Youth issues.

And here is the other collector who keeps all the notes.

The Tomlinson cup was played for 3 years between the winners of the Youth Cup and the winners of the County Cup.

The Manchester United Youth team, who later became the Busby Babes won the Youth Cup on all 3 years this trophy was played for and gave such severe beatings to the County Youth Cup winners that they abandoned the competition.
Nobody knows where the trophy went to but it is not,as you might expect,in the Manchester United museum.
So where is it?

The programmes from all 3 games which were Manchester United Youths v Sheffield and Hallamshire,Bedfordshire and Liverpool can be seen on

www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/sets
this is the worlds largest private Manchester United collection

As far as this specific programmes goes the prices are as follows

Sold on ebay June 2004 for £300-This was a reserve price and only the winner broke this barrier

Sold on ebay in August 2005 for £112.This copy was a bit crumpled. There was not a lot of interest.

The programme illustrated was bought by Manchesterunitedman1 in July 2007 for £158.
As you can see it has some minor issues

Sold at Sportingold in April 2008 for £200 plus commission

A further copy sold at Sportingold in June 2008 for £170 plus commission.

Sold in January 2010 on ebay for £100.Condition best described as fair

Hope the above information helps

Great replies one and all, thank you. I mentioned the price l because I was offered this programme once before for about £30, never took it up as I thought it was expensive. Stupid huh?
I'm not 100% but I am sure my Dad attended this match, and was his 1st ever Man Utd game, and still raved at that team until his dying days.
