I just came across this fixture and programme on Ebay and wondered why United should switch home advantage to Everton? Most know that they played the first 3 seasons at Man City because of bomb damage in the War. When I looked on statto.com Man City also had a home draw, so I am guessing that this was the reason? United also played 2 home matches 'away' in 71/2, Arsenal @ Anfield and WBA @ Stoke because of sanctions. As someone interested in games played on other grounds, other than FA cup semis, I was wondering if there any other games for them where they have played home games 'away' since the War? It might be interesting to see what other teams have had to do the same. There can't be that many games. This is of course excluding various fires etc where there have been temporary moves of varying duration.

After Old Trafford was more ,or less destroyed by two Bombs on March 11th ,they didnt return to play on the Ground until 24thAugust 1949 V Bolton .From 1945-1946 United played @Maine Road at a charge of £5000 per season .Old Trafford, still in ruins ,was used by city free of charge for their reserve games ,as did United play their 2nd XI games there!United when winning the Cup in 1948 ,played all their games "away" even when drawn at home.Huddersfield Towns ground was used once!City proposed to increase the use of Maine Road to £6,500 per season which prompted frantic efforts by the Reds to return home!United did play their first 2 "home "games @Anfield ,and Stokes Victoria Ground, programmes issued were of the host Clubs style ,and not the United Review.Unfortunately hooliganism was rampant in the 70s ,and Leeds I believe the similar fate of having to play a home game ,"away".Before the Valley was re-opened Charlton were in exile at Selhurst Park ,and Wimbledon likewise when Plough Lane went.Brighton also moved temporarily as "lodgers" I think ,and I am sure there are several others!

Walsall played a home game the The Hawthorns (West Brom) in 1969-70 against Brighton. With Fellows Park waterlogged and a backlog of fixtures they were desperate to get games played so used there neighbours home ground. Unfortunately they lost 0-3 but attracted a near season best "home" attendance.

Milwall v Rovers was played on 1-April-1978 at Fratton Park.
Due to previous crowd trouble at The Den.

See it here. www.bristolroversmemorabilia.co.uk/1977-1978-5658.html

Huddersfield v Derby on 8.4.50 was played at Elland Road due to a fire at Huddersfield's ground 5 days earlier, destroying both the main stand and the corner stand.

Kenred is correct re City looking to gazump the Reds but this particular Cup match was switched to Merseyside because City were at home in the Cup and as United had no where else to go apparently the F.A. stepped in and that United could play Liverpool at Goodison-and so they did, winning 3-0 in front off 74,721!!!.

so here is something which has an association with this match but it happened the night before.

Following the pitch invasion during the 70/1 home game v West Brom (after referee Ray Tinkler's infamous offside decision), Leeds were forced by the FA to play their first 4 home games of the 71/2 season away from Elland Road as follows....

Wolves at Leeds Road, Huddersfield d 0-0
Tottenham at Boothferry Park, Hull d 1-1
Newcastle at Hillsborough, Sheffield w 5-1
C.Palace at Leeds Road, Huddersfield w 2-0
