Am I right in assuming that all these programmes are there and accessible to the public upon application?

Some of those old newspapers I'd REALLY like to see

I've been going to Colindale off and on for many years. The amount of 'stuff' there is amazing. I went through many bound volumes of Aston Villa programmes over a period of months.

The service there is slow. If you are going you can reserve a couple of items so that they are there when you arrive. You are only allowed a certain number of volumes at any one time. As you finish with one, order the next one, as it can take an hour or more for each item to arrive.

You'll have to get there soon as Colindale is closing in September.

Microfilms will be housed at the British Library in Kings Cross. Hard copies will be moved to Boston Spa.

I have also spent many a happy day at Colindale researching Newspapers for various projects.

I much preferred thumbing through the original Newspapers although it became more common for them to only let you access the microfilm which is more difficult to navigate through to what you want. Hopefully the digital format will make it more searchable.

I got sidetracked on many occassions and I loved the "fillers" at the bottom of some columns. My personal favourite was, around 1920, when a guy was in court having been arrested for "standing on a street corner without being able to give a good reason!". He was fined.

Happy days.

I've got to say the staff at Colindale are and always have been the most miserable punch of people I've ever come across.

I found them helpful, except for the latter days when they knew their jobs were going.

Martino, I know what you mean when you get sidetracked reading old papers. As a very similar aside to yours, one of my friends in the hippy days was arrested outside Boots in the main street in Cardiff in 1967 for blowing bubbles. This itself is not an offence, but he was fined for obstructing the highway. Some things never change. If they don't like you they'll get you for something!
