It didn't quite work out for Dave at Old Trafford but we ran Liverpool close in 1980 for the league and will never forget the cup run of 79 in particular those epic s/f matches against Liverpool and the agonising final v Arsenal. Jordan, McQueen and Wilkins were top signings too.

Little bit before my time, I was born in 76, but I'm well aware of the epic fa cup battles v Liverpool in 79 and that we pushed them close for the league too. Far from a club legend but a good honest footballing man I'm sure.

RIP Dave.

He was a mild mannered gentleman who was one of the Europe's finest minds when it came to coaching.

He started at Leyton Orient, had most of his sucess at Chelsea and then moved to QPR and he handled some of the best players around in the 1970's, won the Cup in 1970[ironically at the Old Trafford replay]

When he came to Manchester United although he made some good signings and despite winning his last 7 games the axe fell and if you view the headlines below it was blamed on the fans! who felt he was "just a tad negative".

Aside from football he was a real good man-no one had a bad word for him.

Very sad, let his dear sole rest in peace.

Lawrie Mcmenemy of Southampton was the favorite but he didnt want to move out of his comfort zone so we ended up with Big Fat Ron for the next 5 years until the Messiah arrived!.

Dave wasnt exactly a legendary Manager for the Reds, but was noted for signing Gordon McQueen, and Joe Jordan from Leeds United. Also took United to the 1979 FA CUP Final.Had a massive dossier of teams ,players ,and was a good coach ,but alas the job at United was a bit too much for him .He seemed a nice ,pleasant guy ,whom I met on one occasion at Old Trafford.Well respected in football circles, and was the antithesis of Big Ron his successor.R.I.P Dave
