I was going to post this on the 600 programmes for sale section where it's being debated at a quite lively pace at the moment. Anyway, my position is as follows, and I'd be interested to hear any others.....

As a keen recyclist I recycle every envelope that I possibly can that comes through my door. If the front of the envelope is really beyond repair - possibly because of over zealous taping - I always remove the card backing and use that in another envelope. When it costs 60 pence minimum at my local rural post office, and at least 60 pence, usually 80 pence for stamps nowadays, it make sense for both myself and the intended recipient if the postage charges are kept to a basic minimum.

If the post office is lazy and forgets to frank the stamps, I've absolutely no hesitation in using it again and getting free postage. I've done this with a few fellow forum members on here, and had the same afforded to me. It all keeps the total price down and makes sense to do so.

We are rapidly running out of natural resources and anything like this, no matter how small we may think the impact may be, can only help.

Why not recycle? As long as you're not charging for a brand new envelope within the postage charges!

When I used to deal in records, it made good sense to recycle the packaging as, having to be robust enough to safely get an LP from A to B, meant this packaging cost over a quid each.

I don't mind recycling envelopes for programmes, nor when I get stuff sent to me in them.........it's when, as a buyer, there's obviously been something like 60p added on for the packaging and it arrives in a recycled envelope that I, well, not so much object as feel a tad miffed.

Not enough to ever leave negative feedback, though. Not a serious enough offence, in my eyes.

Yeah fully agree with your approach John and do the same myself where possible when selling the odd item on eBay. Quite often the envelopes I get are taped up quite a bit and it is difficult to keep the envelope intact but then I reuse the card and go for a normal (ie cheaper) envelope and sliip the card inside.

I have no issue with receiving my items in reused...although on the basis that if there is an issue with the re-labelling then sender takes that responsibility.

Although what does get me annoyed is the seller who charges £1.50 upwards for p&p and then i get item in reused envelope and sometimes a second class stamp. There are some jokers on ebay now charging £2 or more for p&p for the lighter pre70s items or even tickets.

You can buy unfranked stamps in bunches on ebay for much less than the normal price as well I've only recently found out.

I also recycle envelopes, packaging and re -use unfranked stamps. I always make sure though that any reused packaging is to a good standard. If I use adhesive stickers to cover an old address, I always go over these with cellotape so that they will not come off.

When I sell items, I always list that 'I sometimes use recycled packaging'.

Why throw away a perfectly good board backed enveloped just because they have yours or somebody elses name on it.

I always use fresh envelopes as it gives an air of professionalism. I don't want people thinking i'm some Scottish skinflint. Wink
I never re-use stamps. as i wouldn't want to lick what some dirty old bloke has licked previously. Sad
I would be carfull how one re-uses stamps. If they are just cut out and glued then they will be surcharged even if they are not franked. The old steam from the kettle is the best method. Happy licking.

Its not possible to steam some stamps off if not franked as the POST OFFICE have put in a system that if tried, a detachable section is removed ,and renders the stamp unusable again.Re.Envelopes especially hard backed. I will always try to re-use them.I always try to keep postage when selling ,to a reasonable amount in this age of spiraling costs, and I dont think anyone can fault that. No

Around 200 years ago they invented something called GLUE ....... Laughing
although you seem to acknowledge that in your next paragraph .

Its ILLEGAL as you imply( not just a surcharge ) to re-use a stamp once that it has gone through the postal system ....... Having said that its illegal to do lots of things that people do in the privacy of their own homes ....... The best way to get stamps off paper in the old days was just to soak it in water as they would just float off, ( not to burn your fingers under the steam of a kettle ) however the modern security stamps will not float off as the pre-security stamps did, other methods have to be used as any philatalist will know Laughing

Always re-cycle envelopes where I can and they are in reasonable condition. Have no problem with sellers doing the same for me.

As long as the programme arrives in the condition its supposed to be in then I couldn;t care less how many times the envelope has been used.

So let me get this right.

In order to save the planet AND break the law we can re-use a stamp that it is illegal to use by using glue(that we get by hacking down trees).
What about the rainforests?

We used to use steam from a kettle but we don't now.
Is this because the steam buggers up the atmosphere or because it costs a penny to boil a kettle and every penny counts?

Out of curiosity do they use re-usable plastic cups at Boundary Park for the John Willie Lees or do we just pass one plastic pint around?

Actually you can rummage in the bin by the beer hut and collect the plastic cups and re-use those as well.
That can save a penny or two eventually
