My youngest son (Molineux Paul) phoned me this afternoon to tell me he had obtained two tickets for the Ry Cooder gig at the Liverpool Phili in July Truly Magic..

Blue grass slide guitar virtuoso. If you've ever seen any of the American films about Hillbillies in the Appalachians, it's a good bet Ry Cooder did the soundtrack. I've two or three CD's of his I keep in the car. Should be a superb gig, and I'm jealous.

Sadly I never saw Lowell George (Little Feat).. now he was truly brilliant slide guitarist.. right up there with Ry but with a fabulous voice and some great lyrics.

But I have seen BB King, Springsteen, Dylan, Floyd, Clapton...some great performances there.

If you want to be really jealous, the first festival I attended was Bardney, near Lincoln 1972. The Friday night was completely dominated by B.B.King and Rory Gallagher jamming together for about 4 hours. Had some funny smelling cigarettes as well. What a night!
Also, did the Knebworth festivals of the 1970's and saw the Stones, Floyd, and Zeppelin headlining at various times. One of the best Fests ever went to though had a footballing theme as it was at the Valley, Charlton's ground in the early / mid 70's. The Who headlined, but bill also included Lou Reed, Humble Pie, SAHB, Lindisfarne, Maggie Bell and Stone the Crows. Superb day out, unfortunately marred by the GLC whod ecreed it had to finish early due to noise pollution. You couldn't script it, could you?
Used to go the Buxton Blues festival annually and saw some superb bands there, as well as the annual Windsor Free Festival, which used to run at the same time as the Reading Jazz and Blues fest. Great days, never to be repeated today, due to corporatism and sponsorship.
