Spot on, I've seen quite a few "scarce" Hearts issues go for a quarter of what some dealers have been charging.
Do you think the time will come when dealers catalogues as we know them will disappear due to the impact of eBay? _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |

Offers lists are purely there for the seller, maximum profit. Ebay has been very good for the hobby as have the regular auctions that take place around the country. The only offers list i use are sports programmes, but it has to be something special as there minimum bids are usually high. |

Perhaps there is method to the madness. The guy's good advertising/patter has got him £29 for a fairly common testimonial that sold on ebay last week for £4.20

I have got to say that I have a lot of time for eBay. I agree fully with all the comments about Dealers offers lists. The other problem with them was that if the dealer didn't get as much as he thought he could get then you might not even get the programme even if you are highest bidder. There was no transparency or protection for the buyer about fairness.
The only one I now use is Sports Programmes. Very friendly, good wide selection of items and reliable service and no problems with refunds if required. Yes their minimum prices can be slightly high at times but then I only bid what I can afford or what I think its worth. I have many times offered a bid which is the minimum price and have regularly obtained items so there is no need to have to offer the minimum plus a premium.
There is certainly the issue of the hidden second bidder in eBay boosting the price but as above the advice should be to just bid what you think its worth or can afford. The other tactic is to wait to bid until last few seconds if that is possible. Of course I have bought items over the odds but then there have been as many times where I have got lucky and got an item a lot cheaper than anticipated.
The other value of eBay is that when an unusual item goes for a high price it often flushes out other sellers and its not unusual for a few further copies of rare items to be listed shortly afterwards.
I don't bother with dealers paper catalogues anymore as far too many are still charging prices that are significantly higher than eBay (the worst being programme promotions.....virtually double any other dealer even for common items). In addition for rarer items by the time I receive the catalogue and get my order in the post, invariably someone else has grabbed the item. At least with eBay its a fairer way of giving all collectors a chance to purchase something and not based purely on how good your local postal service.
Not to mention that many dealers now hold back items for eBay so even when you get a catalogue it often has very few unusual items any more. Thus I will browse online catalogues but have no time or inclination for paying a stack on catalogue postage costs only to find nothing of interest. |

As long as you “keep the heid” on eBay, and don’t get caught up in a bidding frenzy, you will be able to pick-up programmes for way less than what some dealers are asking. It’s had the effect of adding some “sensibility” to the market. I very rarely bid on offers lists these days for the reasons given on here, lack of transparency being the major issue for me.
Prior to the advent eBay there was almost a monopoly amongst dealers for the supposedly “rarer” items, you’d look at a few catalogues and they were all in the same price range for a particular programme, and you had nowhere else to go unless something came up on Programme Monthly offers. Fast forward a few years and eBay has shown that some programmes are more common than previously thought and prices have dropped accordingly, as well as helping flush out some rarer items which may have otherwise been snapped up by dealers and sold on at a premium or ended up in the bin.
eBay isn’t the be all and end all of course, I have a local dealer who has a shop specialising in my collecting areas, and you can’t beat the personal touch and walking out of the shop with another few programmes from your wants list. He also sells through eBay as well as issuing catalogues and has a website, he has all bases covered and he doesn’t bother with offers lists, if he has a rare/unusual item he’ll set a price for it, if it doesn’t sell in the shop/catalogue/website then invariably he’ll list on eBay to see what it will fetch.
In my opinion, some dealers need to “get with it” as far as eBay is concerned, or they will fall by the weighside. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |
