Looking through e bay for Pompey...........same ole tat comes round time & time again,

Then I looked at sold items in the pompey collection,

What depressing reading that is...........

whole seasons going for a song, not even a fiver in some cases....

Dealers must be having a field day.........perhaps ?

Just makes ya wonder if worth collecting..... ??????

For dealers it's like trying to catch a falling knief. As for ebay the fact the allowed people private data to be accessed might be putting a lot of people off. That's based simply on the nubmer of views over the last 60 days.

and for punters, their collections are not worth alight... mines chucked in the loft & if the prices don't increase........the tidy bin..

For some collectors it might be a problem but only those that have got hooked on ebay and lost the real reasons why the collect.

Any real collector only thinks about value before they buy not after. People who buy with an eye on selling are not collectors in the real sense and they won't be enoying it no but that can only be good for the future.

A private seller on ebay, who is selling his collection a bit at a time, some are really expensive items, has been told by a friend that the taxman may come after him, any truth in this? I read the guidelines and it is a bit of a grey area.

I would have thought it unlikely that the Taxman would be after him for selling off his programme collection. After all he is only liquidating his assets. I can't see it being much different than say selling an E type Jaguar that you have had in the garage for 20 years and now want to get rid of it.
If however the programmes were bought as say part of a portfolio of investments to make a profit, then that would be a different matter. They are very keen on their pound of flesh on all capital gains such as the profit from share dealing or selling second houses and making an earner.

Not always Bazza,i'm still finding that Rangers programmes pre 70 are generally expensive, there seems to be a new batch of idiot Rangers collectors that are having bidding wars, bloody annoying.
The practice of new issues being sold at OTT prices are a constant source of annoyance to me. It must be a terrible discouragement to new collectors.

A sign of the times - A 1923 F A Cup Final programme in good condition (score marked and a small split at the bottom of the spine) was snapped up at auction this morning for £400 plus commission.

ebay is making the hobby a lot cheaper now which is both good and bad. It allows collectors to build collections at modest prices but also means us middle aged mugs who had to build our collections previously through dealers are now left with worthless investments due to being taken to the cleaners previously.

It's not an investment for me, I am glad there is no real incentive to sell my collection.

I know I could never recoup the money i've laid out but it would be nice right enough if you knew your collection was worth a few bob.

We need to get back to this being a hobby, with fellow collectors helping each other out. It's never been easier now for this to be achievable either, and this forum proves that.

If you have previously bought items as an investment, or thought they'd have held their value, then the risk was entirely with you. I've lost money on quite a few issues over the years but c'est la vie, I paid what I could afford at that time on the basis that it might be worth nowt in years to come.

I collect York issues and for current season stuff, I know it's lost 99% of it's value as soon as I buy it at £3 a time. I collect, it's my hobby, I don't waste £8 a day on packets of cigs etc so if it's dead money then so be it.

Ebay has given everyone the opportunity to buy and sell, and more items that were previously 'off the market' have been flushed out. Supply and demand has driven the price down, and if more collectors entered the market then the prices would probably rise again.

Investments, as they have to legally say nowadays, can go up or down, and you might not get out what you paid in. That's the same for gold as it is for 'gold' edition programmes!

My philosophy is don't spend what you can't afford, write it off after you've bought it, and if you get a few bob back in the fullness of time then good on yer.

As for dealers having it tough, in a supply and demand market they will have to stop charging laughable prices for stock items. And garages full of programmes are sometimes the price of getting those elusive items that have made them a reasonable living over many years.

Collecting's great. what else would you do with your money ? Smile

True, the real value of collecting is holding the item in your hand not in any profit you make selling your collection. If you are buying to sell you are a business and as such take a business risk.

Totaly agree with everything you say, but I need to know how to dispose of my collection from say the last 30 years, must be over a 1000 programmes so I can concentrate on 1946 to say 1980.....

And yes e bay has reduced prices......I remember the days when you offered 'Up to £50', that was the price you paid......even if the next bid down was a fiver......

As I live in Norway it feels like I use nearly half my money on postage charges and customs. Safe to say I'll never get those money back. I live in hope that the day I decide to stop collecting I can either pass it on or sell the whole collection at a decent value.

Prices may have dropped considerably in the past few years but that's the way of the world. It depends how long you've been collecting. I'm old enough to remember paying £15 for Sunderland home pre war programmes . 15p for the 1973 Sunderland v Notts.Co Cup game. Now if can pick it up for less than £100 then you're very lucky.
I did make the decision years ago to buy quality not quantity. Best thing I ever did. I know true collectors should enjoy their collections and not worry about the value, but it's only human nature that we do.

I'm in a similar situation regarding postage . It makes this a pricey hobby.

I've been in the collecting arena since 1975 when I started attending Rangers games. I built up a very nice collection between then and 1988 when I left the U.K. At today's prices worth around fifteen thousand pounds.

Unfortunately much of it disappeared when my parents had a house freshening and apparently some dealer picked up the best part of it for pennies in the pound, sold without my knowledge at the time.

I was out of the hobby until about a year ago when on a trip back to Glasgow my mother in law handed me a couple of very common 2004 Rangers programmes she had picked up in a charity shop. It reignited the flame and I'm back into albeit in a more constrained pre-1960's league and big match field.

Fortunately for me I have met a few collectors, including Eck on this site who are going out of there way to help me by holding programmes for me in the U.K which I pick up on frequent visits back. This to me is what football programme collecting is all about.

I have asked about programme values on a couple of items on here but it is more to see what they would be worth in a barter type arrangement if that situation arises. Of course, like most other people I'd imagine, I love to pick up a bargain rarity when the chance arises but that's not the spirit of the hobby for me. For me it's helping ( and getting help with items) and also to increase my knowledge of football in general and more specifically Rangers, by reading the content of the programmes .
