Another BIN bargain

Picked up a original 1942 Wartime Football League Cup Final Second Leg Wolves V Sunderland teamsheet recently on eBay for a reasonable price. Yes it's bit tatty , but still glad to get it. That's why it's worth religiously checking every day , blink and it's gone.

An interesting story about this game from the local paper.
About 60 fans on the train at Newcastle station , ready to depart for the game , were suddenly attacked by a German plane that sprayed the roof of the station with machine gun fire. ( I assume it was German and not a Geordie as the local rivalry was not so intense in those days ) No one was hurt in the attack and the train carried on. And Wolves won 4-1 . What a day out .

Not as dangerous as being a visiting fan and walking back to Sunderland BR station from Roker after winning 1-0 in 1976!

That was Malcolm Allison's fault . Winding up the crowd before the game with that stupid hat he wore.

Wasn't that the game when the train from London was running late ? The impatient Palace fans decided to jump off the train before the station when they saw the floodlights . As the train pulled away, the fans found themselves standing in front of floodlights of a local coal pit. The ground was miles away .....

I was on that broken-down train. We sat on it somewhere in the midlands for about 4 hours. It's the stuff of legends down here. I have never before heard of any Palace fans getting off the train early and ending up at a coal pit. I think to be honest that would be part of the legend here, if it really happened.

I, along with the vast majority, arrived at the ground at about 5 minutes before half time and got in at the interval when the locals went to the bar or the toilets. Me and my mate stood in with the home fans for the second half and witnessed our goal at the far end, clinging onto each other for dear life. Here's the goal in case you've erased it....



Here's our team celebrating while the fans outside risked life and limb to get back to the station.



British Rail apologised to Palace and said we could have rail travel for £1 to wherever our next away game was. They didn't know it was at Field Mill, Mansfield, which is many miles from a train station, so they had to lay on 3 or 4 trains and about a million buses to get us there.

As I said, the stuff of legends.

can't say. I'm just happy to have a copy. lets say I couldn't afford the normal asking price of £400 plus.
That photo is in my collection . The original. Or so I think. I'm worried

I picked the 1942 Final at Sunderland up a few years back at Southebys with a collection of 1940s for £180.. All the top boys were there bidding but no one knew it was the final because it was not mentioned from looking at the programme.
The photo was copied from a Wolves photo album from the 1940s.

That was bargain of the century . I have seen both legs go for £1800 at auction.
Yes it looks like a normal 4 pager . It could easily be passed by if you don't look properly. The photo I have is the original press photo. I bought it from a well known collector who has used many of the photos I now have in his books.

forgive my ignorance, but why is Albert Stubbins playing for Sunderland in the final.

Albert was a guest player. Very common during the war years. He scored a goal in the first leg.

I had a rather "eventful" trip to Roker Park myself in January 1986, to see the County in the FA Cup.

We hired our own ancient 'pirate' coach which had no heaters (thick snow everywhere too), left Newport at 6am on Saturday morning and somehow managed to miss the 3pm kick-off - after breaking down, getting stopped by the old bill, etc etc.

On the way back, we stopped in the North Yorkshire sticks, at this country pub in the middle of nowhere, and refused to get back on the icy bus until closing time - so the driver buggered off and left fifty of us there completely stranded.


(It even made all the National newspapers!!)

We eventually got back to Newport at around 7pm on Sunday night, after blagging taxis and giving false names and addresses to British Rail (as you did in those days! ).

Great trip that was, we must have been the last football fans in the country to get home that weekend.

Just missed out on another cup final Wolves v Sunderland. Did anyone else notice it ?" Four vintage Wolves programmes for sale " The seller , not a programme expert . No mention in heading that one of them was cup final. Went for a very decent £237

Just missed out too, my only reason for not going higher was that that seller said it was a single sheet, but in your previous posts Wullie you mention it looks like a normal four pager programme or was I missing something?

Sorry mate I was getting confused. Its a single sheet. I was a bit put off by the terrible photo but the seller was genuine. To be fair a few collectors were on to it. Rarely anything completely passes unnoticed

Just curious at how the 'experts' scour ebay. Do they have loads of searches set up , or do they have so much time they search ebay ?
