There was a long thread on this subject a few months ago which explains the position; if I remember rightly you pay up or forfeit the goods.

Search under "customs" and you should find it.

I got a long reply back from the Border Force (I was the one who started the original thread).
In essence, they don't make mistakes!

For a £190 badge, the charge would be £38 VAT plus £8 Royal Mail fee (if I'm reading the letter I got correctly).

You will also have a "duty charge" as the item is over £135 but I don't know what that'll be.

Mounts up, eh?

Don't get me started on customs fees from America, had two instances in the past couple of months both could have been avoided had the yank actually completed the form correctly and both have refused to offer up any kind of apology or offer to pay half the fees which they caused due to being incompetent at form filling.

All it means is I will never deal with Yanks again, never has this problem with Canada Australia, Sweden, Czech, Belarus, Ukraine etc etc only America

Best advice when buying anything from a non EU country is to make sure you have told the seller about our customs charges etc and get them to agree to fill in the customs form appropriately. If you are trading with them, the items you are to receive can be classified as a gift and therefore nothing will be payable for a value of up to £38.

Where duty does need to be paid, it is levied not only on the ceclared value of the items being imported, but also on the postage costs.
