I have just read that a toy battleship sold for a British record £89,000 for a toy at an auction in Newbury this week.

Was this Cameo? If it was I hope the seller knew the risks. The commission income may help them survive.

blimey it's like watching two Chelsea collectors going head to head. They really wanted that one. You could buy every pre war cup final for that amount.

The model boat was not sold at Cameo.
But latest news on Cameo is interesting.
Fortunately I got my money last Monday (in Cash)

http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/.....complaints

I still think I was robbed by Cameo who sold my stamp collection without my permission. I hope the police take action now following the number of complaints - I am more than happy to give evidence.

For future reference can someone confirm that Special Auction Services and Cameo are separate auction houses and not connected?

They are totally different auction houses. The only connection is that Gary Arkell who works at SAS used to be at Cameo a few years back and their offices were next to each other in Midgham. SAS are now in Greenham just outside Newbury. SAS is a highly reputable auction house and Gary is an excellent person to deal with.

WELL sorry folks Cameo have now gone under. READ THE LINK
but setting up again under a new name
http://www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/8236.aspx
I've just had a call from Andrew Lunn at the sheriffs office
it seem that they were not a ltd company so all may not be lost.
he advised me to seek legal advise, FREE if poss which I will be doing
and suggest anyone else who has won a judgment against them
to do the same
Good luck
Dave

They will close.......and as most of this scum do they will re-open under a different name and the cycle continues......

The law against this kind of business practice isnt good enough and never protects the public !!

Shame

Sad

Spot on Rafehod, couldn't have put it better myself.

non payment to consignors - the auction house blame the consignors for not reading the small print.

Taking payment from online bank accounts even when the viewer hasn't made any bids - it's an administrative error?

Local Media Coverage and TV Programme - Escalated out of all proportion they are to blame for damaging the business

County Court Judgements - only tell one side of the story, the company are owed money.

Selling lots without consent at lower prices - consignors should have read the small print, (interesting article below, taken from a poster forum)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I worked for Cameo as a freelance movie memorabilia consultant for about 16 months and I had to distance my self.

I will not go into lengthy details however I was a little naive, a few lots were selling under the reserve, but some lots were going above reserve. If Joe Shmo had 10 items in the auction and say six were at reserve of £500 with discretionary reserve (10% if the running wasnt going well) so the item could sell at hammer at £450. That has to be the lowest reserve. If Joe's other items had a poster say at £1000 and the auctioneer gets £1800 hammer then what was happening at Cameo the auctioneer was making sales because the £800 above reserve was counteracting the lower prices the auctoineer was selling at so a £500 reserve with 10% discretion might be sold for £300. This was too low...but this is what the practice was at Cameo and the auctioneer told me this. I didn't question it as I was the consultant and although I didn't think it right I didn't know if it was the done thing. It seemed that it was a discretionary thing.

So the sale was over and then one or two customers renaged on their purchase...This happens and I warn anyone who goes to auction this can happen and you as a consignor can be disappointed. The auction house does not have an obligation to pay the consignor if the purchaser does not pay...But when some of the higher priced items were renaged on then we have a problem where many items were under sold. I then had a battle on to get the finances sorted out."

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trading standards - sorry data protection, contact the auction house

The Police - Sorry, it's a civil matter

Company dissolved - new one registered with companies house in April. Wife and daughter as sole directors. Sound familiar?

Decent folk owed money and goods from previous incarnation - The Best of British to them.

As Rafehod says the cycle just carries on...........and on.

Hi everyone
re my post of today (above ) I've just been told by trading standards that I was right... Cameo has not been a LTD company since April 2011
SO if anyone knows the home address of Jon King and it looks like he lives in Abingdon Oxfordshire. we can all go after him.
but don't forget that the sheriffs cannot enter a private dwelling
and HE no doubt knows that.so we still might not get anywhere.
the question is are we ready to chuck another £60.00 to go after him
it all depends on how much the slimy so and so owes you

Wish you all the best mate, but I fear you won't be seeing anything.
No doubt the owner will claim 'he hasn't got a pot to piss in', and the new company hasn't anything to do with him.

Happened a couple of years ago in Sheffield, a leading estate agent, went bust with debts of £600,000, owed a lot of local businesses money, and staff as well. Claimed that they only had assets of £4000, despite having a number of porsches in the driveway. Before, any of the creditors knew what had hit them, the liquidators sell it them back, debt free and off we go again.

I knew one kid, who paid a £1000 non refundable deposit to secure a property on the conditions that he could complete within 28 days. This he duly did, but his solicitors wouldn't let him sign the legal documents provided by the Vendor's solicitors because they were wrong. The vendor's solicitor then ignored requests to amend the papers despite numerous requests and then after 28 days, the Estate Agent instructed the Solicitor to withdraw the contract.

Therefore, the estate agents kept the money (£1000), which is rough at best, but then he found out that the vendors were actually the directors of said Estate Agents.

I can't type what I really think of people like this.
