After hearing several disturbing stories, it's now got to the stage where I have no interest whatsoever in purchasing any autographed items. There really are so many dubious characters who forge signatures, that it's become increasingly difficult to tell real from fake. It's also worth mentioning that it's not only the signatures of famous footballers and sports stars that are prone to be fake. Click on the following link.

Well thanks a lot for that...a few hours after I've posted a number of genuine autographed lots for sale for the widow of a deceased friend you've completely and utterly fucked it up. Was it intentional? If not, it's a big coincidence, and utterly thoughtless.

Don't think you got any worries there John. I have no doubt they are genuine. The obvious fakes normally on ebay, such as Messi match worn shirt start price 99p. Who would try and fake a list of stars from the 60s and 70s? All on one page ? I don't think so. I am no expert, but do the "stars" of today just do a scribble? I got autographs from the 1950s and the names are beautiful writtten and we are in no doubt who they are.

I had no idea that you were selling autographed items. I was merely stating my present stance of not purchasing any autographed items because I've been stung and wouldn't want others to fall foul of the same con merchants. The last thing I'd want to do is upset an aggressive Jock, and I resent the implication that I would even consider doing it on purpose.I'm sure your items are genuine, and I'm equally sure that my bad experience wouldn't put potential purchasers off buying from someone as honest and trustworthy as your goodself.

I have collected authentic autographs since April 1998 and have now around 9,000 authentic items, as my interests are sports, ( Football), Books, Music Politics and History My collection covers many sports,( lots of football) Authors, Musicians Politician and historic ones etc

I get most of my autographs through the post , by writing to Celebrities and yes l do get non authentic autographs sent which l dont keep, on Saturday l got Bill Clinton which was autopen and yes these types of autographs are for sale on ebay. I hardly ever buy and l stay clear of e. bay.though l know there are bargins to be had. I get alot from friends or by exchanging from other collectors

Signed Memorabillia is big business and a fast buck can be easy be made, but beware even if the seller says they have a COA ( Certificate og Authentiaty) anyone can do one of those, But while saying that there are alot of geninue sellers out there , but there are some sharks as well

Ther are sites out on the web "Is it Real"Autograph opinion and reference service.
There are also collectors sites which have their own Autograph authentic Guides
when l get a autograph l check it out with such sites or from fellow collectors.
If you are collecting in Person then this is your best bet then you know that you get a geninue autograph

You obviously have a fantastic collection and a substantial knowledge of autographs.Fot someone like me, who predominantly buys programmes but is often offered autographed items, I've decided not to venture again into the 'minefield'.Mind you, with the growing number of homemade programme reprints entering the market, it's getting just as dodgy in the programme world.Like you say, where there's a quick buck to be made you'll always get unscrupulous people, and obviously a recession brings them all out.

I was lucky enough to have several photos autographed by my footballing hero the late Derek Dougan ,( these look great framed), i even posted of the photos i had taken of me with the pictures framed to Derek and The "Doog" duly sent these back to me autographed ?., and may i add at no cost to me. Nothing was ever to much trouble for him and he always enclosed a witty note with pics.
I wrote to one Prem player who my daughter had a crush on at the time for an auto photo and believe it or not he was looking for a signing fee of £50, nealess to say i passed on that.

Signed items have never been of much interested to us as sellers.

I tend to think the whole idea is to have the signiture signed for you at the time as a sort of proff of meeting the person. I can see the fun in collecting signitures but the time when any current footballer's signiture had any value is long gone.

In today modern world of easy transport and accessability I mean. Just look at the state of someone like Pele ? ffs I could have walked up the road and got his signiture last year if I could have been arsed to wait for it and most the 66 World cup (those still alive) travel around in a van to any memorbailia event sitting at a pound a time line of tables.

Vintage Steve, I accept I got wound up when I saw your piece, and should have waited a wee while before replying - or maybe not replying at all. It is stressful trying to pass on a good friend's memorabilia and trying to realise the best price, especially in the economic climate we have now. Please rest assured, I've metaphorically rapped myself on my knuckles for being "an aggressive Jock"
BTW, am Welsh, don't let the name fool you!
