Hi I'm new on this forum, so I thought you guys might help me out a bit. I started collecting programmes about 40 years ago and did so for about 10 years. I feel it's now time to sell some of my prized collection as they have been taped up in several boxes for about 25 years
I've recently started to list some of them on Ebay and I'm not sure of what prices to start them at , for instance I started the auction for the 1953 Millwall V Man Utd friendly at £4.99 and some other 1950s at £2.99, as I don't want to give them away is there a general rule of thumb for prices in certain decades or due to a special match, for instance I have 1950s Cardiff City V Wolves in whitch Wolves won 9-1 away which is still a record I believe, I have some 1940s and 50s Cardiff City programmes to sell along with most other league and now non-league teams also some England and Wales internationals.
The two I'm very reluctant to sell is a near mint 1925 Cardiff v Sheffield FA Cup Final Tie Programme (just rusty staples) and a 1936 Newport County v Luton Town league programme which is in pristine condition .

Anyway I've rattled on long enough. Ayatollah

Welcome to the forum!

Why not list some of the programmes on here before placing them on ebay? There's lots of different club collectors on here and it will save you ebay fees, and you'll be offered a fair price.

It will also help identify which ones are the more sought after programmes.

you'll get a lot of pm's from the "not worth much mate brigade" on here.
the truth is that you couldn't have picked a worse time to try to sell in the last 10 years.
the country is the worst depression i have ever known and now is not a good time to sell.
having said that it could get worse over the next few years and the prices might fall even more.who knows.
every club has its rare, really rare and i've never seen that before programmes as well as the genuinly "not worth much mate" programmes.
there is no rule of thumb in this hobby.
some clubs have very few collectors such as Bolton,Blackburn that spring to mind.
that is not to say that the programmes are not collected.it's just that there are fewer collectors than some other clubs.
at the moment post war Leeds seem to be the club to die for.
Arsenal collectors historically don't go daft.
Manchester United and Spurs have people who are prepared to kill for the right item.
if you had to put a statemnet on things i would say the very old,the sparsely attended or the to find this.
i don't know if i can help but if you wanted to send me a list(and possibly a few others on this forum) i would be happy to give you a feel of what i think your items might be worth.

Thanks for the advice, I proberbly would be better off as you said with saving on the Ebay and Paypal fees. It's funny one of the 5 programmes I listed was a Nov 1950 Hearts of Midlothian programme and as you were replying I was browsing through an Oct 1954 Wales V Scotland International programme, now that is spooky Sherlock

Ha well there you go! treble's advice is sound, there is no hard and fast guide to prices for the items you have, and prices for programmes have been on a downward slide for a few years now - apart from the genuinely rare items.

If you want advice on your Hearts and Scotland items I'm more than happy to help, I'm sure others can advise you on your other programmes.

Cheers Treble, I suppose the reason I'm selling is because of the state of the economy, having just closed my shop (not a programme shop) in Newport things are getting very tight indeed. Like you said I couldn't believe what some of the 40s and 50s progs were selling for. One of the programmes I listed was an excellent condition 1951-2 Birmingham City programme and with one day to go it's only had six views Shocked

Anyway thank you for your offer of helping out I'll try and put a list together and post it on the forum soon.

Cheers mate
Tim

Bloomin eck I've just noticed the 1950-1 Birmingham City v Aston Villa I listed has only had 4 views and I think I was 3 of those on another computer, strange the Millwall v Man U one has had over 40 hits and the Hearts programme nearly 30 hits Confused

Partick Thistle, it now has 7 watchers and 5 bids at £16 with a day to go.
Must be popular mate as it has had more hits than the other 3 English clubs listed put together, Smile
