Speaking of pirate programmes, we played Sabadell and Tarragonna in a triangular tournament last summer, I was at the game and there were no programmes, even asked the club if there were any team sheets but there was nothing. Then I get home and see some guy has listed ten pirates for the game at a fiver each, obviously he didn't say they were pirates. I reported him and sent him a message about it, ebay did nothing and he relpied saying he was providing a service as there was no programme. I'd have been fine with that if he'd said it wasn't official.

I think that the FA, Clubs and Ebay should clamp down on people producing these type of pirates, as i'm sure there is some kind of copyright nowadays with use of clubs logos etc.

Plus it will stop these scumbags trying to bring our hobby down into the gutter

Pirate programmes are part of the history of our hobby, all major internationals and finals pre war had pirate programmes bar 1 or 2,
They are very collectable but are worth less than a official one.

The difference between then and now though is that pirates from the 70's backwards were available at the game. Even some of the pirates emanating from Europe are widely available at matches, sometime 20 different ones. The pirates advertised nowadays though are just knocked up on someone's computer and called a programme, and sole way after the original game's by, which is complete and utter bollocks of course. The obvious answer i for folk not to touch them with the proverbial barge pole, but some folk are just incredibly naive and stupid, having to have everything associated with a particular game.

Someone threw together a pirate for a couple of games Shamrock Rovers played on one of the spanish islands against a couple of Russian Premier league teams at the start of last season. Again, they weren't available at the game. The creator of those particular gems appeared to have scanned a Shamrock Rovers programme cover and amended it as required.

Im surprised that auction hasnt been pulled yet, theres a VERO member on ebay called "Umbrobrand06" whose usually shit hot on any unofficial use of the 3 Lions logo and that one is a blatant copyright infringement.

Spot on.

I have bought pirates in the past at Scotland away games, Milan and Kiev spring to mind, but at least they were on sale outside the ground, not run up on some chancers PC a thousand miles away.

it's the raw collector in us all.
we just have to have something if indeed not everything especially on tours to overseas grounds or cup finals and the like.
whenever Manchester United play a Russian team they all bring over a lot of pirates.
against Torpedo Moscow there are about 15 different pirates.
the Rusky's were selling them from about £3 upwards and had about 200 each.
what they didn't sell they took home and flogged again for the second leg.it paid for their trip.
so a pirate on sale at the ground almost becomes official..
every time you fly to a Manchester united european away game you are met at the airport by the same Spanish printers who travel anywhere in Europe as the profit is that high.
United take about 2000 fans to most gamws overseas and i would be interested to know what percentage buy a pirate(sometimes more than one)
i believe the Chelsea boys have the same situation.
interestingly enough i have a pirate in my own collection.
it is from the 1911 FA cup final played at Old Trafford on 26/4/1911 between Bradford City v Newcastle.
this was the first full season at Old Trafford.
i am not an expert on Cup Final programmes but i am led to believe that there was nothing official for this game.
this is a flimsy 4 page pirate but i think possibly the only thing in existence for this game.

I don’t have a problem with pirates if they are on sale in the city around the time of the game, and if they are of decent quality.

I recall the Scotland game in Moldova a few years back, the official programme was free and was placed on every seat in the Scotland section (it also covered the previous days U21 game). However at the airport and around Chisinau a green 12 page “pirate” was doing the rounds which by the looks of it was produced by the Moldovan Tourist board (yes there is one!) selling for the equivalent of about £1. Decent quality, glossy, almost all in English, and a good souvenir of the trip/game.

About a couple of months later, 4 page photocopied pirates started to appear which came from some bloke in Russia, for the U21 games, umpteen different designs and frankly rubbish. These were definitely not available in Moldova or at the game and are just rubbish. I would imagine he still sold a few and made his money, but why do people bother?

.... and hes got a couple of underbidders so if hes put these together himself he'll be able to do a second chance offer to them as well, sort of answers the question of why people bother making em doesnt it !!
