Love this photo. It’s Birkenhead boxer Pat McAteer flying out of the ring when he fought in New York 1956. Pat was from a famous family of boxers and won British and Empire titles. His nephew, Jason , found fame playing football . I think he was sent off a couple of years ago for getting involved in a punch-up playing in a charity match in lreland Laughing

Yes, a corker. Was that "British Sports Picture of the Year" for 1956?

The one I attach won that accolade in 1961 - Gordon West in diving action, then of Blackpool.

Don’t know Pete, it must have been a contender. A little story about Pat McAteer. When he started to make some money from boxing ,the first thing he did was to buy his parents a brand new house ,which had just been built directly outside Tranmere’s ground at Prenton Park. I remember the Gordon West photo being a prize winner. There’s a few boxing/ football related photos for sale currently on eBay . I can pick out Everton’s Fred Pickering and Jimmy Gabriel, plus boxers Tommy Farr and Johnny Cooke ( in sunglasses) on this one .Sports writer Frank McKee with moustache.. Looks like Stan Matthews and Wilf Mannion on this one, can’t name the other footballer. The seller thinks the boxer might be Freddie Mills. I think it might be Joey Maxim, who was over in London to fight Mills.
