My British Newspaper Archive membership has lapsed but I found this which at least gives you a date

PORTSMOUTH NEWTON HEATH At Fratton Park, Portsmouth, in brilliant weather, and before 7.000 spectators. During first half the played up very determinedly, and on more than one they came within an ace of getting through, but the interval no scoring had taken place. In the second moiety (?) Portsmouth scored a couple of goals, South and Joyce doing the needful. Result: Portsmouth ... 2 Newton Heath ...0

Which suggests game was played Monday April 8th (Easter Monday)

If that is right then their schedule that Easter was

- Friday 5th Lincoln (away)
- Saturday 6th Birmingham (away)
- Monday 8th Portsmouth (away)
- Tuesday 9th Barnsley (away)

With all four games ending in defeat...

I can confirm that what Sid posted is the syndicated report given to most papers. I found that exact in two others, including the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser. The Guardian has a slightly different report, though again only one par.

Portsmouth v Newton Heath - About 10,000 spectators witnessed the match between Portsmouth and Newton Heath at Fratton Park. The first half was keenly contested, the home team having rather the best of the pirited play, and but for the activity of Whitehouse would have scored several times. Half way through the second half Joyce score a second goal. Result: Portsmouth two, New Heath nil.

The Guardian, 9 Apr 1901, Tue, Page 3.

I have not found anything prior to give an inkling of when the game was to be played, but the Monday appears to be the consensus.
