Would you start collecting if you were 11 yrs old in 2023?

Back to the original question, my son is 13 (so close to 11), and I have always religiously bought a programme at every game we go to.

He hardly ever asks to even look at it, he is more interested in what social media and youtube videos are on his phone.

He loves going to football, he is interested in the game at all levels, the grounds, the kits, the latest stats and results particularly non league, but mainly through social media and youtube vlogs, almost no interest in programmes.

That's very interesting, I wasn't even aware of these centenary celebration games. New Zealand's propensity to stick with programmes may be in part to do with the fact that it is arguably closer to British culture than Australia is.

Interesting discussion this, I started collecting at the back end of the 88/89 season, Dad took me to my first game at local team and there were a bunch of programmes on the counter in the club shop a number of which were Spurs homes picked them up as i was/am a Spurs fan and then started going from there. Originally picked up loads of programmes from Steve Earl in bundles (Met Steve at a programme fair at Ashford Kent in the mid to late 90's). Used to get Programmes for birthday's, Christmas and Easter (instead of chocolates). Now in my 40's still love going to non league games where they have little huts selling programmes and digging around for a few bits or finding those little gems on Ebay. Football wise I am at around 27700+ programmes if you add in other sports (Mainly Ice Hockey) I'm at just over 31100, then I've also got loads of fanzines, books and other little bits of memorabilia


If I was 11 now would I start collecting football programmes, hard to say, I think I would be collecting something but whether that would be football programmes is the question.

Others have mentioned about collecting being a gene, and i think mine was from my granddad, who had three sheds and a greenhouse full of tools, when he passed it took ages for us going through the sheds sorting everything out. Myself as well as the football programmes i also seem to hoard DVD/Blue rays and during covid lockdown(s) after getting bored in November 2020 I found myself on the Lego website and being a huge Star Wars fan, bought a number of items and have continued buying Lego Star Wars since, leading to me now owning over 385 sets. I've still got all the original Star Wars toys from the early 80's including a load in the original packaging so 100% have got that collecting/hoarding gene so would definitely be collecting something if i was 11 years old now, just unsure as to what that would be...
