Auction items that don’t sell

Hi all

Quick question. Is there a facility for people to make offers for items that go unsold at auction houses? There are a couple of items that are way overvalued at sportingold and have pretty much no chance of reaching the estimate. So when they don’t is it possible to contact to make an offer

PS no criticism of sportingold, it must be almost impossible to know accurately the value of all the programmes that come through there. I am sure it happens at all auction houses as wel

I've contacted Sportingold a couple of times and said what is the best price so always worth ringing

In the case of Sportingold and perhaps any others, if an item fails to sell then it is offered at the reserve price if you ring them up after the auction or if the auction is still running-some pick up the phone some will say wait till after its over.

Each Auction House has different rules. Some will allow you to contact them after the auction if an item does not sell , some produce an unsold lots list where you can contact them and get the items at the reserve price. some will put the item back in at the next auction at a lower reserve price , finally some return the item to the vendor. There are no set rules.

Thank you all for your replies, they were very informative.

My guess with sportingold is that some of them at least are put back in the next auction, they went on a run if 3 or 4 auctions where the same 1958 World Cup programmes kept showing up till they eventually sold.

I know I am often surprised with the prices some programmes go for in auctions, sometimes a good but more than the same item on eBay. But this particular one has an estimate more than twice what the last two have gone for on Facebook groups and eBay, and that’s before commission! I just think there is no chance it is getting sold
