13/05/33

Cowes v Southampton (Westwood Cup)

The Westwood Cup was an end-of-season invitation-only affair, raising funds for the Hants F.A. Benevolent Fund. Opposition was different from year to year.

Cowes won this match 3-2. None of the Saints players listed made 1st team appearances that season, as far as I can tell.

13th May, 1968

Cumbernauld United formally opened their new ground with a game against a Celtic side which included a very young Kenny Dalglish.

13th May, 1995

Upper mid-table end-of-season match in the Midland Combination Premier Division between Olton Royale (based in Solihull, I think) and Studley BKL.

The title was won by Northfield Town.

14th May, 1983

Derby County 1 (Davison) Fulham 0

att: 21,124

Infamous match which "ended" a tad early with Derby needing the points to guarantee safety and Fulham needing the points in their bid for promotion.
The aftermath was the only time I ever found myself on the Baseball Ground pitch but it was a lot safer to do that than try and swim against the crowd by heading for the exit.

Thursday 15th May 1952

YMCA Charity Match (at Elgin City)

Morayshire Select XI 1 Crystal Palace 4

Gate: ?

So Palace ended the 51/2 season with a tour of the east coast of Scotland, this fixture being the third and last match and the only successful outing, having drawn 1-1 at Dundee Utd (12/5) and lost 1-3 against an Inverness Select XI at the Caley ground (13/5). This match was at Borough Briggs, the most northerly league ground in the UK, and Palace became the first English club to play there. For the travelling Glaziers' army, there was a variety of hostelries at their disposal. I wonder how many travelled up.... if any!

The programme is very rare and I don't know if they exist for the other 2 matches. Nor do I know the attendance or scorers in this game. If anyone has any of this information, do please tell. Thank you.

Sunday 16th May 1982 (mum's 64th birthday)

Friendly Charity Match (Richards Hospital Rose Bowl)

East Grinstead Town 1 Crystal Palace 7 (seven)

A charity match with a pretty checkered history having been competed for 9 times in the 40's & 50's and then not for nearly 30 years. And after this game Palace didn't play there for the Rose Bowl again, but I'm not sure if anyone else did.

I would imagine those 50's Chelsea aways are worth a few bob today!

Grinny currently play in the Isthmian League South East division, which they joined in 2014, though the last 2 seasons haven't concluded satisfactorily. At the time of the game they were in the Sussex County League 2nd Division. Palace had just completed their first season back in Div 2 after relegation in ignominious fashion. The total carnage of the Noades/Mullery period was about to start.

16th May 1963

Romford v Leyton Orient

Probably was arranged as a post-season friendly but, withthe season extended due to the awful winter, the O's still had one league match to fit in after this.

17th May, 1947

Derby County 1 (Morrison) Sheffield United 2

att: 17,660

17th May, 2008

Big game at the top of Div.2 of the Essex Olympian League (hence the special issue programme). Linford Wanderers knew a victory at 3rd placed Hutton would guarantee them the title. They did so, 4-3, in front of around 150 people (huge gate for this level).

Quite a turn around for Linford as, the previous season, they had finished the season bottom of the table having acquired only 3 points, conceding 136 goals in the 28 games.

There was talk of Linford Wanderers actually being the oldest football club in existence, beating Sheffield FC by a couple of years but I don't know if anything more came of that line of research.

Division One Play off Semi Final Second Leg

Tranmere Rovers 3 Swindon Town 2 - 19 May 1993 - Att 16,083

The first leg Swindon won 3-1. Swindon scored two goals in the first three minutes, John Aldridge wrongly had a goal disallowed in the 4th minute and Swindon went 3 up on the half hour (Steve Vickers of Tranmere at fault for all three goals)

John Morrissey pulled one back for Tranmere in the 2nd half to make the game finish 3-1.

On to Prenton Park. John Moncur put Swindon 1 up in the first half, Mark Proctor equalized on the stroke of half time to make it 1-1.

Second half it was like the Alamo, Tranmere got a 2nd and kept pressuring, then with 8 minutes to go Steve Vickers made another error and Swindon equalized.

A minute later Tranmere got and scored from a penalty given away by Glen Hoddle, but Swindon hung on for the last few minutes and went through 5-4 on aggregate (and we had an away goal to hang to as well if it had finished 5-5).

(If that game nearly finished me off the final against Leicester 12 days later when we threw away a 3 goal lead and then won through an extremely dodgy penalty 7 minutes from time was even worse for the nerves. Thank you David Elleray for awarding that penalty!)

Friday 21st May 1971

Floodlit Friendly

Crystal Palace 1 Clyde 1

Gate: ?

Not so much an end of season friendly (the domestic season finished on 4th May, 17 days earlier) but more a warm-up for the forthcoming Anglo-Italian Cup matches against Cagliari and Inter Milan. Don't think I went to this game as I would have been saving my new pennies for the big-spending Italian giants. The two sides were well-matched as both had just avoided relegation from their respective First Divisions, Palace going down 2 seasons later, and the Bully Wee at the end of 71/2.
