6th May, 1959
Blauw Wit v Derby County (Fr)
Don't know the score but the attendance was roughly 2,000.
Blauw Wit (translated - "blue and white") were an Amsterdam club who were quite high up in the game there until professionalism took hold in the early 50s. They attempted to keep up with the pace but.....within 2 years of this friendly they were a second division club. They merged with two other Amsterdam clubs in the early 60s but the new club (FC Amsterdam) were dissolved in 1982. It's all a bit convoluted.
I'd need to refer to my books but I have a feeling that Steve Bloomer had a connection with Blauw Wit at some point and perhaps this is why this match was arranged.
Nice programme, though. Doesn't turn up too often.

Tuesday 7th May 1963
Division III
Bristol City 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Burridge)
Gate: 8,732
Tonight's league table shows Palace with a further 4 games to play, and City just the two after this one. Palace were on a roll though and lost just 2 of their last 15 games, beginning on 30th March. As a result, their position tonight, 14th and a point behind Brizzle, was improved on so that Palace finished 11th while City were 14th at the end. Peter Burridge scored 10 of the goals in this superb run-in.

7th May, 1938
Everton 1 Derby County 1 (Duncan)
att: 18,291
In my opinion, the Everton programme of the late 30s wasn't just the best programme of its era but also the finest issue any club has produced, ever.
7th May, 1968
Tooting & Mitcham United v Dulwich Hamlet
Nothing much riding on this match. Tooting would finish 8th, some 21 points behind runaway champions Enfield. Dulwich would finish 15th, some 17 points clear of Maidstone who had been at the foot of the table since before Xmas.

Thursday 8th May 1969
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 2 Swindon Town 1
Gate: ?
Some nice words there from Sir Bert Head following Palace's first-ever promotion to Division 1, along with his old club Swindon's amazing double of the League Cup win over Arsenal and promotion as runners-up to Watford from Division 3. This match came just 48 hours after the reverse fixture played at the County Ground for Peter Hilton's Testimonial. Not sure how hard it is to come by the teamsheet now, which I've had since the day and can't quite understand why I have empty brackets as a Palace sub! |

The Daily Mirror of the following day gives the gate as 6,746. |

Saturday 9th May 1953
Surrey Senior Cup Final (at Selhurst Park)
Tooting & Mitcham United 2 Wimbledon 1
Gate: 8000+
Palace hosted the county cup competition final at Selhurst Park 16 times between 1938 and 1959 and once at the Nest in 1921. This match saw Tooting & Mitcham Utd take the title, a feat they have now accomplished 9 times in all. Dulwich Hamlet lead the winners' table with 16. The current holders are Met Police from 2019 as it looks like they didn't complete it last year due to the pandemic.
This Wikipedia page shows most of the interesting facts.

Monday 10th May 1971
Testimonal Match (John Simpson)
Gillingham 1 Crystal Palace 4
Gate: ?
Quite a career this chap had at the Gills, having started his career with 5 games at Lincoln City before the move to Kent. The stats show 564 league games played, but he ended with 571 so must have played another 7 in the 71/2 season. Good to see such a great line-up in the Gills' team too, for a fine professional and great keeper. |

Friday 11th May 1979
Division II
Crystal Palace 2 (Walsh, Swindlehurst), Burnley 0
Gate: 51,482 (ground record)
This was the night of all nights at Selhurst Park, I don't think they really know what the actual gate was. As you can see from the league table, it was really close, with Palace in 4th place and the top 3 promoted. In 1978/9 it was still 2 points for a win but goal difference had been in place for about 4 years. The goal diff for the top 4 teams was as follows:-
Brighton Pts 56 GD 33
Stoke Pts 56 GD 27
Sunderland Pts 55 GD 26
Palace Pts 55 GD 25
Thus a defeat meant Palace stayed 4th and Sunderland were promoted. A draw meant Palace were up in 3rd place on goal difference. A win meant Palace went up as champions. The photo below shows Dave Swindlehurst waiting in vain for Clarets' keeper Alan Stevenson to drop the ball. It was still daylight so probably fairly early in the game. It took 77 minutes for Palace to break the deadlock, when on the edge of the box Ian Walsh dived to head home Vince Hilaire's cross. Cue pandemonium, and 10 minutes later Swindlehurst fired a deflected shot past Stevenson. All over.
What a night!
Interesting to note that Steve Mackenzie won the Young Player of the Year award. He never played a 1st team game at Palace. Big mistake letting him go. |

Three of the Derby team on the day (Parry, Young and McQuillan) went on to play first team football for the Rams.

12th May, 1962
Second leg of the Anglo-French Friendship Cup.
A Bill Curry goal gave Derby a 1-0 victory in the first leg at the BBG a few weeks earlier but I'm not certain what the score was in this particular match. I've heard two different opinions so I'd best say "unsure" at present.

Friday 13th May 1977
FA Youth Cup Final (second leg)
Crystal Palace 1 (Fenwick), Everton 0 - (1-0 on agg)
Gate: 14,045
Palace won the trophy for the first time just 48 hours after the first team won at Wrexham to give themsleves a chance of promotion from Division 3. Most people at the final were still on a high after that amazing night in North Wales. Terry Fenwick got the only goal in both legs in the 89th minute. 7 of the side listed were also qualified to play in the 1977/8 competition, also won with the winning goal by Fenwick.
I would like to now highlight Kenny Sansom, Palace left back in the final and probably the best player in the club's existence. Certainly, in my existence. Sansom played tonight having also starred at Wrexham two days before, in fact he played 14 games in 38 days, that's 10 league games and 4 Youth Cup ties. The dates he played were April 5, 6, 9, 12, 13, 16, 23, 26, 30 and May 3, 5, 7, 11, 13. He was ever-present in Div 3 (46 league & 9 cup) and at this stage was just 18 years and 8 months old. And the thing about him was, he didn't just "play", he dominated the game from left back. He tackled like a bull, he sprinted like Bolt, he defended and attacked in equal dynamic measure and he took a mean long throw. We had never seen his like at Palace and we were so lucky to have him. He also won the first 9 of his 86 England caps while at Selhurst. And take it from me, he was not the same player once he left Palace. It's so sad to see him fall on such hard times now, with various vices taking hold. I know Arsenal and Palace have done, and continue to do, a lot for him.
Note, I only gave Ken a 6 in my programme ratings - I guess he was a bit tired!
