20th April, 1946

Charlton Athletic 2 Derby County 1 (Stamps)

att: 50,000

7 days before the two clubs would meet in the FA Cup Final.

20th April, 1970

Aldershot 4 Bradford (Park Avenue) 2

att: 4,861

The end of the road as a League club for Bradford. Given this was the fourth successive season they'd had to apply for re-election, no one seemed particularly surprised when Cambridge replaced them.

As the BPA official history recalls, though, the Aldershot defeat was the club's 56th successive away game without a win - ironically, the last one was at local rivals Bradford City in Feb 1968 - and crafty Cambridge employed "mini-skirted girls wearing mortar boards" outside the Football League HQ to sway the delegates as they arrived to decide on Avenue's fate.

And, after 4 years of dwindling gates and ever-increasing financial problems, the club called it a day in 1974.

Wednesday 21st April 1948

Division III South

Reading 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 8,582

And so the season neared its end with the two mid-table sides locked together and with the prospect of the reverse fixture to be played just 3 days later - this game having been postponed from its original December date, as the Club Chatter reveals. Palace won that game and ended up in 13th spot, 3 places and 2 points behind the Biscuits.

Game of the day, this one, with the Rams and Owls occupying the top two places in the table and games fast running out. Wednesday got their revenge 24 hours later for this defeat, hitting Derby for 6 and eventually winning the title.

Saturday 22 April 1939
Division 3 South
QPR 1 (Joe Mallett) - Watford 0
Gate: 7364

As the final season prior to the War was coming to an end, two clubs with no real aspirations of promotion met at Loftus Rd. Ex-Charlton Athletic forward Joe Mallett was the sole scorer. He went on to a long history with QPR, playing 297 games and netting 60 times.

Scottish League
First Division

22nd April 1967

Dunfermline Athletic v Stirling Albion

Not going to lie, this isn't my favourite lay out of a Dunfermline programme but it happened on this day so it will do.

Not a bad game mind, given it ended 3-3

22nd April, 1935

Derby County 4 (Ramage, Duncan, Gallagher, Hughes) Everton 1

att: 17,718

The win allowed Derby (6th) to move ahead of Everton (5th) in the table.
One of only two appearances Alan Hughes made for Derby (he was Sammy Crooks' understudy) but Everton must have been impressed that day as, a few weeks later, they signed the winger permanently.

Wednesday 23rd April 1952

Grand Football Match

Denis Compton's XI v Alex James's XI

A friendly at Selhurst Park, with proceeds for the Sir Philip Game Boys' Club, between two teams of mainly star footballers including Denis Compton, in goal, and Hughie Gallacher then aged 52. Palace provided several of the players to make up the numbers. If anyone has any match details, I'd be very grateful.

Scottish League

23rd April 1966

Heart of Midlothian v Stirling Albion

The photo simply doesn't do justice to the front cover of this programme. The Scott Monument with "Auld Reekie" in the background. Brilliant.

1-1 draw in the capital for Stirling .

I found this on the British Newspaper archive if it helps....although having just saved it to here i can't read it as it's too small! I've saved the page on my computer, so if you want me to send it to you let me know.

23rd April, 1955

Lincoln City 3 Derby County 0

att: 18,700

Long since relegated, this was a seventh successive defeat for a rather bedraggled Derby team who had only won once since the first week of December.

23rd April, 1955

York City 1 Derby County 0

att: 14,976

A "must-win" for Derby with games running out but this defeat allowed Grimsby to beat Southport 48 hours later and take the title and one available promotion place. The Rams would have to wait another 12 months to escape the Third Division.

I wonder if they're going to start next season there?
