16th April, 1938
Derby County 4 (Nicholas, Crooks, Dix, Astley) Liverpool 1
att: 16,524
A strange season all round. This match saw 10th play 9th but the league was so tight that, with only 6 games of the season remaining, they were each only 6 points above the relegation places and, indeed, only 15 points separated leaders Arsenal from 22nd-placed Grimsby.
With this being the first of 3 games in 4 days, it was perhaps understandable that Liverpool made so many changes to the expected XI.
16th April, 1932
Tunbridge Wells Rangers v Barking Town
Kent League
This was the visitors' last season using the 'Town' suffix. The home club appear to have been one of those who folded due to the war and never started up again.
16th April, 1966
Unusual item - an LP issued by Wealdstone featuring match commentary of their 3-1 success against Hendon in the Amateur Cup Final that day.

Scottish League
Division 2
Stirling Albion v Dunfermline Athletic
Front cover of Albion programmes this year featured a brief pen pic of the players. For this game it was the turn of James Symington.
2-1 win for the Binos |

Monday 17th April 1967
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 1 Dundee United 1
Gate: ?
Some worthwhile reading matter in the Club Notes column:
Regret I don't know any more about this game, not even sure I was there or not (aged 11). The notes refer to West Ham, who, incidentally, lost 7 and drew 1 of their last 8 games - the fines mentioned came after the second of those losses. Maybe their 3 World Cup winners took the month off, or, perhaps, were pretty tired given the fact that this season started only 3 weeks after the World Cup Final. |

17th April, 1920
Chelsea 0 Derby County 0
att: 40,000
17th April, 1948
Cambridge Town v Pinner
The home side won the Spartan League that season, 5 points clear of their only serious challengers Metropolitan Police.
Three years later, they changed their name to Cambridge City FC.
Not such a great season for Pinner who finished 12th out of the 14 clubs, two points ahead of Wood Green and the Lyons Club (named after the tearooms of the time?)

Can you imagine them getting away with that now?
There are half a dozen imposters wearing a Derby shirt this season I'd hammer with fines and if they want to go running to their agents crying "it's not fair", then let them. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Easter Monday 18th April 1949
Football Combination
Portsmouth 1 Crystal Palace 2
Palace stiffs were on a good run as the season ended, losing only once in the last 7 games, and there was some optimism in the camp despite the 1st team collecting the wooden spoon in Div 3 S. On this day, they lost at home to Torquay.
_____________
Wednesday 18th April 1962
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 3 (Heckman, Smillie, Long) Real Madrid 4
Gate: c 26,000
Last April I posted the official programme rather than this pirate issue so thought I would complete the set today. In addition last year I put up a Real Madrid team photo taken on the night, so now I show Johnny Byrne in a match action shot - the recently-transferred Byrne having been given permission by his new club West Ham to play in this floodlight opening friendly against star-studded opposition. Casado is the defender clearing here.

A visit to Forfar for the traditional bridie (famous meat pie) and on this occassion, a point.
Game ended 1-1
If you ever find yourself in Forfar, I recommend the bridies! |

Tuesday 19th April 1949
Division III South
Torquay United 2 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 7,552
24 hours after the reverse fixture at Selhurst, won by the Gulls 1-0, they duly completed the double over ailing Palace to move into the top half of the table and condemn them to an unsightly grovel before the re-election committee for the first time in their existence (but not the last!).
Worth reading about the man on the cover - David Mercer, an RAF fighter pilot, DFC, golf professional - and son of an England international. |

19th April, 1947
Grimsby Town 2 Derby County 0
att: 16,200
One of the great cover designs. Given what the news is full of today, it's almost poignant to see that the graphic artist has made the FA Cup (remember it?) a bigger fish than any of the individual clubs......
On the same day, at Highbury, Leytonstone beat Wimbledon 2-1 to collect the FA Amateur Cup in their first final.
They would repeat the feat in 1948.

Good Friday 20th April 1962
Division III
Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 1 (Dowsett) Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 13,499
Palace in their 13-match winless run at the end of the season, their first back at this level after promotion in 60/1. Post Johnny Byrne's departure goals were becoming an issue and the scorer here, Dickie Dowsett, was one of several strikers to join Palace before or during 62/3. As for Boscombe, they were chasing Pompey and eventual runners-up Grimsby, in the end finishing 3rd, only three points behind the Mariners.
My first-ever game was on the next day - 59 years ago tomorrow. More to follow. |

Scottish League
Division 2
Montrose v Stirling Albion
25 years ago today. I had been nightshift and held on, eventually getting home just after ten. Something to eat, shower to refresh then jump in the car for the 2 hour trip to Montrose. There was no way i was missing this one.
Montrose 0 Stirling Albion 3
The video print would read
Sirling Albion are confirmed Second Division champions
I would hang back in Montrose for a bit, enjoying the post match on field celebrations before driving home, getting in at 8pm. Quick shower, something to eat then back out for the nightshift. Home again at 8am, shattered but delighted.
25 years ago....wow.
