Saturday 24th January 1976

FA Cup 4th round

Leeds United 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Swindlehurst)

Gate: 43,116

Something from a paper about 20 years ago....

One of the best days of any Palace fan's life encapsulated in this photo of Dave Swindlehurst turning to celebrate his headed goal from the brilliant Peter Taylor's cross. 45 years ago - I still get goose-bumps. Triumph and disaster in one image. Wonderful!

24/1/59 FA Cup 4th Round
Tottenham 4 Newport 1
A brace each from Dave Dunmore and Bobby Smith gave Spurs the victory over their Third Division opponents, but in the next round they would be knocked out by another third tier team as Norwich claimed their scalp in a huge upset.

24/1/70 FA Cup 4th Round
Tottenham 0 Crystal Palace 0
A blank day at The Lane, but four days later Palace would win the replay 1-0, before losing to Chelsea in Round 5.

24/1/95 Anglo Italian Cup - English Final ist Leg
Notts County 0 Stoke 0 Agg 0-0 (Notts won 3-2 on pens)
After a weird format, Notts County would eventually lift the trophy after defeating Ascoli 2-1 in the Final.
Their Cup success and distraction it brought may have been a factor in their poor league form as they were relegated to the third tier of English football at the end of the season.

24/1/78 Hitachi League Cup 1st Round
Wycombe 3 Staines Town 1
Victory for the hosts, but their run would end in Round 3 at the hands of Leatherhead.

There can’t have been many matches that ended up with a 7 - 5 score line, but that was the final score when Workington hosted Blackhall Colliery Welfare.

Not sure of the score here but Briggs Sports must have won as they went on to reach the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners Crook Town.

Saturday 25th January 1958

Division III South

Southampton 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Cooper)

Gate: 13,046

Another close defeat for Palace in this nail-biting season that decided who would drop into the new Div 4 for 1958/9. Palace did, Saints were safe in 6th. Making an early start for Saints was right winger Terry Paine and I thought it right to pay tribute to him, on his way to an incredible 713 league games for the Dell side, scoring 160 goals. He also played 111 for Hereford at the end of his career that saw him win 19 England caps. Here he is in 1960, when aged 21.

25 January 1947

Doncaster Rovers v Carlisle United

Nice image of the old Belle Vue ground on the cover.

Rovers were on their way to the Third Division North title. They were helped by hammering Carlisle 9 - 2. Rovers scored 123 goals that season and their top scorer, Clarrie Jordan, got 42 of them.

While the first team were getting thumped, back at Brunton Park, Carlisle Reserves hosted Murton Colliery Welfare.

Saturday 26th January 1952

Division III South

Walsall 3 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 4,666

An awful defeat for Palace at Fellows Park against a side who would eventually finish bottom with the Glaziers 5 places and 8 points better off. Laurie Scott had been manager since October and he wasn't an immediate success, but at least Palace didn't have to seek re-election, thanks largely to Cam Burgess's goals (21 in 22 games) but he was missing here. Plymouth were promoted as champions.

26/1/52 Division One
Arsenal 2 Manchester City 2
This was Arsenal's fourth match in an unbeaten run of sixteen matches, but with the Double in sight, they fell apart and lost four of their last seven matches including a 6-1 thumping from eventual Champions Man Utd and defeat in the FA Cup Final to Newcastle.
To add insult to injury they were also pipped to second place by Spurs.
Great image of the old Highbury on the cover.

26/1/80 FA Cup 4th Round
Cambridge 1 Aston Villa 1
Almost an upset as Villa were held by their opponents from Division Two, but the chance had gone and Villa won the replay 4-1.
Villa would go out to West Ham at the Quarter Final stage.

26/1/82 Friendly
Scunthorpe v Nottingham Forest
No idea what the score was, but this looks like Cloughie was pulling his side down a peg or two by making them play against Division Four opponents.
Going in to the match, Forest had only won three of their previous ten matches , been dumped out of the League Cup by Spurs, the FA Cup by Wrexham and three days earlier lost their local derby to Notts County.
If so, the shock treatment didn't work and they failed to win their next four as well and only won six of their remaining twenty two matches that season.
Scunny had to face re-election, but whoever was arranging their friendlies was doing a great job as they also faced Spurs around this time.

Saturday 27th January 1962

Division IV

Darlington 1 Gillingham 1

Gate: ?

Amazing how a certain date evades fixtures for your club - so I chanced upon this one, a random 4th Div game with basic information. Though I noticed two books of the Bible in direct opposition - inside left for Darlington was Luke, up against Gillingham right half, Proverbs. In this season which saw the division reduced in number half way through, Darlo ended up in 13th spot on 45 points, and the Gills were 20th, 8 points behind. Millwall won it by a point from Colchester.
